The Lone Ranger (2013)

He was also Tonto in the '81 version with Spillsbury. Of which I'm apparently one of three fans that I know of, counting the other two in this thread.

OMG you're right!! I've actually never seen it the whole way through, but I think I caught part of it on TV once and said "Hey! That's the guy from Twin Peaks!"

Long time LR fan and could take or leave Depp in most things. Having said that, I don't mind the casting. Adam Beach has never impressed me and Eric Schweig is too old and fat now(yes I know he's younger than Depp but he certainly doesn't look it), although I would have loved him in it a few years ago. I think Depp will do fine.

I don't dispute this, but I do think it's a pity that, say, someone like Wes Studi couldn't have been used, or perhaps finding some new NA face we haven't heard of who could surprise audiences with his talent.

I may have to check out the '81 version some time.

:facepalmYeah because it's real obvious from 1 picture that he's going to have the makeup on through the entire movie.

If that's not his regular makeup, then they need to release a promotional pic that has him in his regular makeup. Otherwise, everyone pretty much assumes what you see is what you get...
I'm sure Depp loved The Lone Ranger when he was little, as I did too, but he should have never agreed to do this part, IMO.:unsure

Would there be this dispute if we were talking about a Black character? Or Asian?

Any race has plenty of people that can play THEMSELVES!! I think they know how.

I casually know many First Nations, Indians, or Natives. They don't talk like Tonto, but don't remind me of Depp either.

I'm going to make a movie where Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr counsel Obama on his entrance into politics. And I'm going to cast Robert Downy Jr, Johnny Depp and Mark Wahlberg to play them.

Also, Ben Kinglsey will show up as Ghandi to recommend a more peaceful platform:

I like Jason Barr's comment from Collider:
5. First Image of Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in THE LONE RANGER
>>image<<
I won’t lie to you, my interest level in director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s The Lone Ranger currently sits at “slim to none”. That said, with the release of the film’s first official image hitting the interwebs this week, I have to pay tribute to Johnny Depp for his willingness to make Tonto look like a slightly more deranged Captain Jack Sparrow. Kudos, Mr. Depp. You’re wearing the hell out of that seemingly deceased bird.
TOP 5: JOHN CARTER, Topher Grace Edits STAR WARS Prequels, THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, SILENT HOUSE, THE LONE RANGER
:lol

who cares if he is a real live indian or not,, more PC crap, just like greedo shooting first. Depp is a great actor and I dont care if hes playing an indian, asian black white or alien, he will sell tickets, the picture looks interesting to me I can't wait to see it. I only wish they could insert Clayton Moore digitally somehow into it for a cameo

maybe next we should complain that Vader had a black guys voice but was a white guy in costume and then maybe we should all feel bad because we laughed at a fat guy because him name was porkins

Eh. Nothing they said in the article said they gave their blessings for him to play Tonto as opposed to an actual Native American. They were there to work with him on suicides.

I still won't see the movie.

I am sure its been said but Depp is the reason the movie has Verbinski and a budget. I will see it because I grew up watching the Lone Ranger and it cant be WORSE than "The Legen of the Lone Ranger" was in 1983.

Incidentally, does anyone have or has anyone seen pics of his gun rig? Do you think he will use the traditional awesome Hollywood "two-gun" rig?

I read that the painting is just supposed to be the bird flying behind the central figure, not parked on his head, and Depp misunderstood it. Easy mistake to make I think.

I saw the picture of Depp first then the painting and thought nothing of it until you brought this up. Now I see the painting completely different lol

Will the Ranger sport the classic light blue suit in this? I've pushed the limits of my Google-fu, but I can't find any pics other than the black suit.

I actually liked the 2 single gun rigs introduced in Legend. I actually thought it made more sense then him sporting the "fancy 2 gun rig" (quoting Silverado).

but I'm just hoping this movie doesn't suck The Lone Ranger deserves a decent movie!
