This could be the worst replica I have ever owned. I kept from buying the previous Angel puppet replicas due to how bad they look when compared to the original. I know that the one on the show was a Henson creation but these things look horrible. My fav was the vamped out Angel puppet. When Diamond Select Toys announced that they were going to release an 1/2 scaled vamp version I was actually excited. Well that is till I saw the picture. I decided that I wanted one anyway. Well I just got it in the mail today. #19 out of 10,000 and I wish I could report that it is better than the previous 2 versions. It does not even look close to the screen version let alone the press pics. What really makes me mad is the back of the box. It states and I quote:
"For the first puppet the first step was flying to the west coast to see the actual puppet in the fox production offices. From the opening and closing mouth and its leather coat, right down to its miniature replica boots, we knew we were in for a challange. We measured everything from the size of his ears to the width of his boots... close to 100 hundred reference photos were also taken. Over 6 months of pre-production work and research went into bringing you the first 1/2 scale replica of the puppet Angel from "Smile Time" and another 3 months went inot making refinements and reproducing the vampire "bumpies" in the best way possible- enjoy."
What did Diamond Select do with all of the pics and measurements? From the neck down he doesn't look too bad. The leather coat is obviously not leather, but what do you expect for $50.00. The coat, shirt, and pants have working buttons and the jacket has pockets. I really like the boots. Now the real problem, his face. I do not understand why out of 3 attempts, Diamond has been unable to produce a replica that remotely has the facial features of the screen version. Does Henson have some sort of copyright on the design that prevented Diamond from making a dead on replica? This thing is horrible. I remember when the first pics surfaced of Diamond's first Angel puppet. The fans went nuts on how much it was off. Diamond than reassured us that the face was undergoing a complete redesign. Then it hit the shelves. I thougt what a piece of crap. 2 versions later we have another disappointment. I do not know where to begin. The whole face is off. It is like they threw out the photos and measurements and just wigned it. The eyes are not located in the right spot, it has no cheeks, the face comes down to a point and pencil neck, the brow is all wrong, and the hair looks and feels like a troll doll. The mouth opens but has no way to stay open. I think my 85 year old grandma could have created a closer puppet by just watching the show. I will keep the puppet due to the fact an ugly puppet is better than no puppet at this point. I have hoped that someone with the skills here at the RPF would do this justice. Just my 2 cents so let me know what you think.
