The Legend of Zelda Series

With me, I have kind of an odd start to this series.

Back when Zelda came out, I thought it was going t o be one of those Final Fantasy type games, where you didn't have full control over your actions. Press B to jumpy three times. Press A to and so and so. like those newer DS Mario games that came out. So, I was against playing this from the start.

yet, somehow I got ahold of it, and once I actually got around to playing it, thus began my love afair with the zelda series.

Zelda games are more than just games to me, they are an immersive experience. Especially the later games where you get to explore the world. you don't just play link, you become link, as you experience his world and all the fun, and or annoying characters you encounter. it's more like an interactive movie than a game.

My all time favorite will be the first one, because it's the only one simple enough that you can pick up and replay any time you want.
Any game past part one, and it's far too complicated to remember all the details needed for casual play.

When you get into the Nintendo 64 games, I find it quite impossible to play without a guide telling you where to go, and what to do.
the odd thing about playing this way, is that you'd think it would ruin the experience, but it somehow doesn't. you may be spoiled with being told what to do, but reading it, and experiencing the narrative as it happens are two different things, and you get even more enjoyment out of it without wasting time chopping grass, or riding your horse trying to figure out where to go.

Many a night I spent waiting for daylight to come as the real time world went on around me ;o)..

these games are a big part of my child hood.

Having just seen the latest trailer for the newest one though... it didn't feel like a zelda game to me just yet.

something is missing, but i'm not sure what. same goes for skyward sword. the only zelda game i still havn't beaten yet, or even really felt the need to start. it would be very hard to top twighlight princess for me as I Remember that being quite fun.

do you think the zelda series has reached it's narrative limit, or is there more?

Windwaker was the peak for me... I've played all the others, but the latest haven't really worked for me. I'm not sure what's missing. Maybe just WAY too much time travelling from A to B.

That new trailer was just boring. I think it was TERRIBLY edited... the music and scenes had no energy.

I'll still play though. But LESS story this time would be great. The one with all the flying bored me to tears. I started up the game, poured some whiskey and got playing. 2 hours later I was drunk as hell, and still just pressing B for the most part to continue reading another long history of Hyrule.

Just give me a sword and let me do my thing!

I never really liked any of them except Link To the Past. I hate the cartoon style they went to with Windwaker and the others and am glad they're ditching that for something more traditional. If you want to read a long history of Hyrule i have that hard back book nintendo put out that's the history of the world and series. That is some long long reading lol.

Nintendo needs to bring us the old CD-I zelda games as DLC lol. I do like Hyrule Warriors on a side note. I always wanted to do a fan game where it's Hyrule a few hundred years in the future and it's cyberpunk after Ganon won and the reincarnations stopped for a while. That annoying faerie would be a hologram program. It'd be like Shadowrun meets Zelda.

the legend of zelda is one of my all time favorites. ocarina of time is my all out fav! I've played them all, including the DS games. i stopped after twilight princess, not because of story wise or lose of interest, just stopped gaming. i caught up on the stories of the new games on youtube.

i did how ever get a link between worlds for a gift from my girlfriend. i thought it was awesome!! it was kinda like a rebooted link to the past. majora's mask had to be the biggest disappointment. not only did the game suck, but i remember paying 60-65 bucks for the game, coming home throwing it in the N64 and the damn thing telling me i need the expansion pack... i think that was 45 bucks alone? had to save up a whole other month to play it... longest month of my life

i remember playing majoras mask and thinking how the hell are kids suppose to know all these exact times to be here and there in order to get the next mask. the game was impossible to collect all the items without the players guide, which was another cheap shot to rob 30 more bucks off ya...

wind walker had a great story too, i didnt like the whole boat thing but Ganon's statue under water, i loved it...

I love the console games, the ones I've played anyway. The last Zelda game I played fully was Majora's Mask and I only played a bit of Windwaker but there is something inherent in that series that I have a deep affection and admiration for despite all the recent non-sense of ret-conning the entire series (and the whole idea of reincarnation). I think it's the literary nature that these games have.

"Legend" being the key word. A legend is a story traditionally passed through history orally and each telling of it depends solely on the person recounting the tale; it changing time and time again but the key elements remaining. I think bothering trying to connect them all together is a pointless task and hindering the development of these new games. Forget trying to ham-fistedly establish a lore to these games, the fact that many of them were self-contained stories of their own was enjoyable enough, and focus on what made them good in the first place: good and fun gameplay!

UPDATED:

Just saw the trailer for the new game and though I can't comment on how the game will play, it does look interesting and has gotten my attention. Should I ever come to own a next gen console, I may pick this up to give a go. Although, I hope there is an option to turn off the voice acting. I like my Zelda sans spoken dialogue; I feel more connected that way.

majoras mask?

I think he means Skyward Sword. I bought that when it first came out, and I kind of did the same thing, the damn tutorial bored me out of playing the game. It was half a hour in and it bored me to death, like I dont know how to play a zelda game. There should be a mode where you can turn the damn tutorial off. But seriously though, I love the Zelda games, hated Windwaker, didnt like the art style, and the boat stuff was SO BORING. Ocarina of Time is my favorite game, love that one. Twilight princess was a lot of fun too, never beat majoras mask.

Not too sure how I felt about that trailer. Its like the art was mixed with TP and WW. Not sure how I feel about that, and I know that was just a teaser, it mostly show cased the enviornments. I love the Zelda story/mythos, but Im not sure where they are going to go with this. I hope its some where good though. If Tingle is int it... I might go insane with rage.

that's my problem with these games, to fully enjoy them, you need a guide. to not waste time f iguring out where to go, you need a guide. and even then the 3D world can be confusing and you mess up.

I've only played through all the zelda games once. they are not pickup and playable except the first two.

I've never played any of the Zelda games. Based on how much they're loved I feel deprived.
Maybe I can get a good NES emulator for my iPhone so I can try it out.
Is this a game that can be appreciated by a late comer? I'm not deterred by primitive graphics - in fact I relish retro gaming.

I'm a big fan of the Zelda series.. I've only played the console games (except for A Link to the Past) and still revisit the older games from time to time. The game cube Zelda collection is a big help for that, though it is fun to boot up the NES from time to time

I really find it hard to pick a favorite game but I feel like I'd have to go with Twilight Princess, Windwaker or Ocarina.. with Majora's Mask close behind

The first for NES is great, but A Link to the Past for SNES is better in every measurable way (and most immeasurable ones).
LttP is one of the greatest games ever made, and I say that in all seriousness without hyperbole. You should play it. Everyone who plays video games should.

edit: As something completely different from the rest of the series, Zelda 2 for the NES is actually a really good action rpg, and in a lot of ways also ahead of its time.

Dude. Youre doing yourself a disservice if you havent played a link to the past. Its almost TOO good.

I bought that hard backed guide set taht was put out a few years back, got one with a mangled outter box for literally half of retail lol. I wanted the final fantasy guide set the company did but it's too pricey.

Zelda is a huge part of my life, and Ocarina of Time basically raised me as a 10 year old going through a time of divorcing parents. I can sit down and replay OOT and MM any day of the week, they both mean that much to me. That said, I was FRUSTRATED with Skyward Sword after having played it to completion when it launched and really was left looking for something fresh in the future of the series.

This new trailer indicates to me that Nintendo has taken those steps to really change the dynamic of the series, and I'm overly emotional but it makes me cry every time I watch it.
Link has always been a character of his own to me, not an avatar, and so I'm glad to finally see that characterization come through strongly, and for them to loosen up the trademarks of the series and let his gear be customizable and not slavishly tied to the history of the franchise with the green tunic and hat. I am beyond excited for this game now, and I will be grabbing it day 1.

Ocarina and Wind Waker were the newest of the games and I just can't get into them. I miss the top down style of Link to the past.
