Paul Feig's Bridesmaids was among my favourite movies of 2011, so I definitely wanted to check out The Heat and it was pretty hilarious :).

I won't get to see This Is The End till October and so far The Heat is one of the funniest film of the year for me.

How is it even remotely possible that this is ahead of WWZ in the box office? How?!?

Why The Success Of "The Heat" Doesn't Mean Anything To Hollywood
Long read, but interesting nonetheless.

"The biggest irony? “Men don’t go to the movies as much [as women],” says Terry Press, a longtime Hollywood executive who is currently co-president of CBS Films, the mini-major studio releasing The To Do List on July 26. “Younger males are now the least reliable to turn out [for a movie]. Women go to the movies. When there’s something women want to see, they turn out, both younger and older.”

So why is Hollywood still making so many more movies geared towards men, and starring predominantly men, if young men aren’t turning out to the movies as much as women? “Movies aimed at guys are so clearly aimed at guys,” says Feig with a sigh. “It’s just that women have over the years been conditioned that that’s what they’re going to get, so they go along with the guys to see the movie the guys want to see. It seems to be much easier for guys to get their girlfriend or wife to go with them to see a guy, verses the woman getting the guy to go see the quote-unquote chick flick.”

This attitude within Hollywood has, in fact, led to a system in which studios consistently support their male-centric movies with bigger releases than their female-centric films."

A couple thoughts off the top of my head:

Its expensive to go to the theatre. Almost $15 to get in unless tuesday evening or a matinee. So for me...there has to be some bang for the buck so to speak. And that is in no way disrespect to so called chick flicks. I certainly have no problem with a female oriented comedy or decent romcom. I just have a hard time justifying a big screen to see them. I might even catch this with the wife if we can get coverage for the kids. Also...these blockbusters are designed...to possibly be male oriented...they typically ensure the female audience isnt excluded.

regarding the younger boys...i think you are seeing a sideeffect of the still more male dominated gaming aspect. Probably seeing more young guys gaming instead of going out. Not saying they are making the right choice mind you. It is an aspect of more of the entertainment dollar being splintered to digital entertainment.

And similar to the first point...it is the movie industry conditioning us to only be interested in "event" movies. event movies are typically over the top action oriented...with a few exceptions (titanic). Also...witg the evnt movies and license tie ins...there is the supplementary income aspect which can be huge. Ie toys...which are only viable on the event movies...

I laughed a whole hell of a lot more at this than This is the End. These two would be the subject of so many I.A. investigations, based on their behavior as law enforcement, but it plays hilariously.

I just got back from seeing this and this movie was a riot. I saw "This is the end" a couple of weeks ago and I think The Heat beat it hands down for being funny and I liked "This is the end."

Went and seen this tonight with my Mom, she's a big fan of movies like this. I thought it was pretty funny, I enjoyed it. Very cookie cutter cop movie but still a lot of enjoyable parts.

in all honesty, i had low hopes for this movie (esp. as a guy)... but, i can't remember the last time i laughed this hard... it was really freaking funny... up there with bridesmaids and hangover... unless i was just a little too drunk, but i think it will stand the test of time as a funny one. her movie right before it, "Identity Theft", was terrible.
