The Duke's Lamp from Dishonored 2 (WIP)

This is my first attempt at replicating a lamp that appears in only one level of Dishonored 2. If I could ask for the benefit of anyone's experience, I've had a hard time finding painting techniques for making metal look old. Not rusty or scorched or looking like the paint has chipped off. Just old; like a metal object that is taken care of but you can still tell it isn't brand new. I've tried a few different things and can't seem to get that look. Any advice is appreciated, and thanks for looking.

Hi. I know I'm commenting quite some time after you posted, but wow! I love how your prop turned out. It looks very accurate and well done. I'm impressed with how close you matched it to the in-game model. As for advice, I don't have a lot of experience with making metal look worn, but I would think dulling some parts could help. Is the lamp made of metal or is that paint? If it's metal, you could try using some sandpaper and lightly scuffing the edges. Additionally, steel wool could potentially work in some areas, but you would want to select something that isn't too abrasive. If it's paint, you could still do the sandpaper method, but make sure it's a really high grit paper and sand lightly so you don't go through the paint.

Also, how exactly did you replicate this so well? It really looks fantastic. I've been trying to see if I can rip models from the game to 3D print and refinish, but I haven't had any luck. If you sculpted it, you did a fabulous job.

Hi, and thank you for your kind words. I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. I honestly haven't been back to the forums since a few months after I made this last post. As for the model, the current real-life version is completely 3D printed aside from the glass and the uprights which are just brass rods. The color comes from rub-n-buff if you can believe it. Painting and weathering have never been my best skills, and I was never completely satisfied with this as the final version of the lamp, so for the last year or so, I've been teaching myself the ins and outs of metal casting in my back yard. As you can see, just the base of the lamp is quite complex with lots of undercuts, so I've been testing out various techniques (sand casting, lost foam, ceramic shell, etc.) and I'm about ready to start making some full-size tests for the different lamp parts. Of course I'll put the final results in the thread. The attached picture is of an early aluminum cast of a silver ingot also from Dishonored 2. Still some room for improvement.

Having checked your Instagram, I immediately spotted your Dishonored 2 raven and saw that you expressed an interest in ripping models from the game and printing and finishing them yourself. If you're ever interested, I have found a way to rip models from the game. The raven is nice, but I'd love to have a wooden version of that horse bust you see around Karnaca, and pretty much everything else from the game as well if I'm honest. Let me know if I can get you anything, and thanks again for the advice and support.
