The table is finished! (But the project continues)

Here is a video overview of its functionality. Sorry about the cell phone quality, I'm hoping to shoot some better video later:

Here are some photos of the finished table:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Original Post:

I'm very excited to have finally reached the point where I can show off my latest project - A full sized Holochess table that lets you play the game of Dejarik!

Many of you might have seen my other thread where I have been sculpting all of the Holomonsters, I've taken the next step and am now beginning the initial development for a full sized table to display them on (and play with them!).

If you have 20 Minutes today to watch this video I made, I would love to hear your comments. If you don't have that much time, you can jump ahead to 15:05 to see the cool part.

I'll be posting my progress in this thread, and eventually might be offering kits to help you build your own table. I also might eventually be producing 1:3 scale tables and figures so you can play without a full sized table, and even a generic version of the game that lets you play with a set of custom dice.

Thanks in advance for following along! Comments & suggestions are more than welcome.

    Re: The Dejarik Project

    Thanks again guys!

My dad and I worked a bit on a cutting/spinning jig for cutting the inner wood frame and spinning the table top. I'm still grinding down my top to size, but I'm happy with the "spun" look I've been able to achieve with this jig. I've also found a good method for cutting and finishing my blue/red light disks.

    20150714_182146.jpg

The table half is fully printed, still quite a bit of finishing work though. This half will be molded and used to make the two table halves.

    20150714_182349.jpg

Yes, at this point, kits & finished tables are very likely! I'll need to finish this one and see just how much work/cost is involved in the end, but I am doing things with the thought of making many more of these in the back of my mind.

The table top half looks excellent! As a kit, two halves would be easier to ship, yeah? Really want one of these, but thinking that shipping would be a killer.

This is by far one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I can't wait to see a full game once it's finished :)

Have you considered doing augmented reality for the game? I know it's definitely a whole other ballgame but just watch this video and tell me it wouldn't be awesome to see virtual Dejarik on your phone... you could make a killing selling the app and a mini table that connects via bluetooth or something.... the possibilities are literally endless

After fiddling with cutting/polishing my own light disks, I finally caved and ordered some laser cut acrylic disks. They came this past week and after frosting the backs of the disks, they look just as I had hoped.

    Re: The Dejarik Project

Howl, it will cast in two parts, but I'll be binding them together with fiberglass/resin and patching the seam. I suppose if people want the raw bumpy half casts I could do that. But it makes sense to me just to ship the cleaned up & combined top in the same box as the playing surface, base ring and top support disk as those will likely all be able to fit inside the top for shipping.

Its been a very productive weekend.

I finished the mold, I'll be pulling a half tonight.
    20150906_122640.jpg 20150906_211756.jpg

We also finally picked up "the tube" - Which is 14" (35.5cm) wide by 20' (6 meters) long. I should be able to get 9 table stands out of this thing.
    20150907_105009.jpg

This is how we got it in the car.
    20150907_121506.jpg

I'm very anxious to get a full table top put together, so I'll likely have it figured out this week.

    Re: The Dejarik Project

Loads of progress over the past week! Still a very long way to go, but it's starting to look like something. The fiberglass tops have proven to be much more work than I anticipated... They come out of the mold a little wonky and need a huge amount of finishing work. I'll be looking into other casting solutions, and as crazy as it sounds we are looking into building a very large hand cranked rotocast machine to help us with this.

    20150910_114805.jpg 20150914_090845.jpg

I needed to get out of the garage this past weekend, so I was able to tackle some "inside" projects. I bought a craft vinyl cutter that has made cutting out the playing surface and the key stickers SO much easier:

    20150914_085702.jpg

I also toyed around with the augmented reality idea. At first I thought Starrfox1's idea was completely undo-able and out of my league, but 3D scanning and AR have been getting much more accessible lately and with enough time I think I might actually be able to make something work very well. The idea was most appealing because the movie scale of the holomosters makes playing the game a bit cramped, and some of my monsters are a bit fragile which isn't too practical for playing the game. I have a bit of a programming background as I am a web-application developer by trade, and I've tinkered with some (certainly amateur) phone applications. I'm thinking of using Unity3D, Vuforia and a VR headset (likely start with Google Cardboard) to make this a reality. How cool would it be to be able to pick up and move actual holographic 3D models around the table in virtual reality?!

Here is the result of my tinkering with a quick Monnok scan and some makers - this is using "AR-Media" which I found was a bit finicky, I'm hoping the Unity3D/Vuforia solution will be much more consistent and enjoyable.

    aug reality.PNG

The AR thing is certainly not a priority at the moment, but I thought I would tease at it, as it is certainly possible.

    Re: The Dejarik Project

I can't even begin to express how awesome this is.
You have come up with such an awesome way to recreate a fictional and "impossible" game and I applaud you for it.

I'm just spitballing here, but in regards to the Chips you are using for Augmented reality, what if you end up not only animating the creatures, but building the rules of the game into the A.R. display so that instead of manually moving chips, you could just use the entire board as the marker?!? You could then effectively just play the game exactly like it is in the movie (while looking through the AR device) by pushing the buttons and have the program move the hologram pieces and attack. I'm sure you're already way ahead of me and I have no idea how to do that, it just seems that if you've already come this far, the technology is already there to get it that one last step to a perfect recreation.

    This is just amazing!
