The DaVinci Code: slightly pimped Swiss Bank Key

Just wanted to show the Swiss Bank Key from The Da Vinci Code that I recently finished. Not 100% satisfied, but already better than before.

I used the only more or less accurate key that's out there to my knowledge, which is the Noble letter opener version. All of these replica's had the goldplating on the cross starting to corrode and fade after time. So when doing my run of goldplated Aztec Pirate Coins, I thought: why nog have that cross part goldplated too?

So I took the letter opener apart. Basicaaly it has 4 parts: The cross, the lily on the cross, the key part, and the letter opener blade. I took out that last part, since I don't want it to be a letter opener. Getting the key part out the cross was a bit tricky. Getting the lily of was easier. So after the cross was goldplated, making it a bit thicker, I had to sand down the pegs of the lily part and the key part so it would fit in again. After that the lily was glued back into place, but glue didn't work for the key part. So in the end I used JBWeld for that.

All in all, the only thing that changed, was the gold cross. What I still don't like on the key as it is now is:
1. The little dots that are seen in the movie are not there (since these are on the side where normally the letter opener blade was).
2. The rune-like inscription is not engraved, but just a decal.
3. Also the silver key part has mild signs of corrosion. The silver is "misty" on some places, but I can not polish it, otherwhise it will rub of the runes.

Anyway, this is how the key looks like now. The gold part is real 24k gold now, which looks a lot better than the faded gold it was before.

If someone knows where to get a better replica of this prop, with the dots on the back, the rune letters really engraved, etc... Please let me know! But until now, I wasn't able to find one...

Looks so much better Tom. I have this prop as well and the cross feels so cheap. It's a shame no one has done a proper run of these but I guess the demand isn't that great.

I'm in contact with a fellow RPF member who is 3D modelling the bank key. I've sent him detailed photographs and dimenions of the Noble key and his model looks very promising. it also has the laser dots on he back. I asked him if he would be doing a run here on the RPF. If this could be printed in metal, this would be a great replica, I guess... We'll see...

This replica prop of the Swiss Bank Key came into my possession in 2006 a few months after the movie was released. This piece of jewelry was created by the jeweler Michelle Ong of Carnet Jewelers, the same jeweler used to create the bank key for the film.

The key is made of platinum, gold, and steel. The fleur-de-lis, which is the centerpiece at the top portion, is made of solid platinum as marked by the PT 950 on the rear and clearly indicated in the photos. Also, the large letters PS (Princess Sophie) are visible on the center of the reverse. The cross surrounding the fleur-de-lis and the chain are made of solid 18 karat gold as indicated on the rear top below the DVC symbol by the mark 750. The shaft is made of steel. The back of the shaft contains the dots which are read by the laser. On one side of the shaft is seen the Depository Bank of Zurich’s street address, “HAXO 24” and on the other side a series of symbols.

This key was not used in the film but rather is an exact duplicate of the screen used version. It comes with a custom made case made exclusively and marked by Carnet Jewelers.

Mother. Of. God. That is amazing. I had no idea this (these?) were produced.

Wow, that must be the ultimate replica of this prop... Any idea if the jeweler would make these on order?
The film set required a few of these be made, some modified some which looked like this one. The story behind this one is that in order to promote the film they had an extra one made and auctioned it off. Michelle Ong from Carnet Jewelers who produced these for the film is located in Hong Kong, I don’t know if she produced, or would produce, any others.

Yeah, looked up her website, and I think having one made would cost a fortune (if she would do it at all). In the meawhile I'm in contact with someone who's 3-D modelling the key to see if it can be printed in metal / gold / goldplated /... I hope a nice replica will come out of that project.. No idea if he will do a run of these...

I wonder if it would be cheaper to print them in traditional materials and have them chrome painted like Creations n Chrome does

I bought the letter opener one, I'm simply going to replace the blade part of the key with one printed in Rhodium plated metal at Shapeways. An early estimate is that it will cost roughly $70 to print an accurate blade part in Rhodium with the runes engraved. I'm going to also slightly engrave the dots on the back and then use a gold leaf pen to color them gold.

I would be super interested in a replacement blade. Is there one available at shapeway right now or are you going to upload your own design?

Yep, I need to make final measurements of the one on the letter opener (with no letter opener in the replacement shaft of course) and then I'll make the part available on Shapeways. I've used their Rhodium before. It should be excellent for this, it's that shiny chrome looking finish and won't rust or corrode.

Sound great! you're also going to model the dots on the back then, right? Do you have an idea on the price tag for a piece of that size in Rhodium?

Here is an old thread about the Key with some great screen shots.

I gave a rough estimate based on an early design in my previous message. Not cheap. (you missed it?) Could be in the $70 range.

It will take some time to place the order, have it made, and shipped to me, but I think I'll do it in STEEL, just to test. The steel is not a perfectly smooth finish, but is MUCH cheaper. I may be able to sand it down to smooth and make it usable for a fraction of the price.

Yeah, if you can sand it down with a fine grid sandpaper and then polish it wih brasso or something like that, I bet you can make it really shiny.
