Well Hello everyone. As I'm New to this i thought I would give a go at making a costume for an upcoming fancy dress shindig at my local boozer.
I have chosen The Dark Knight as a Costume, as i have seen so many other guys giving it a go so thought... "why Not"?

All comments and questions are welcome.

The Materials I have used are as Follows.

1 x Foam Camping Mat
4 x Sheets of 1.5mm Black Craft Foam
1 x Hot glue Gun
various craft knives
Old knee and elbow pads
a Single Black Flat sheet
Latex Mask (the Dark Knight)
One Costume Belt (the dark Knight)
Black Wellies (cheaper option)
last but least lots of patients!!!

I will aim to post pictures up here too so you can see how this develops.

I went out into the local town and bought a few bits and pieces for my costume that were relatively cheap.

A black long sleeve top £5.00
Black Nylon jogging bottoms £6.00
Black Gloves £4.00

this will give my costume an added kick.

Firstly, as a portly gentleman I had to be clever with my measurements so that when the costume is finished it will not be too saggy or requires me to hold my stomach in (none of which are good things)

I took a sheet of Black Craft foam and copied my measurement for the chest piece and picture I ripped of the internet for guidance. this gave me the back plate. I then 2 sheets of newspaper and shaped them up so they filled out and give the chest piece the padded look it needs.

Cutting several different shapes and piecing then together using the hot glue gun I was able to get a good look for the piece and then finally added the Bat symbol, (also out of craft foam) see the picture below

First post here. I'm starting this build too in a few days. So I'm going to be watching this closely. Thanks! Looks great so far.

To get the detail in the armour I used a soldering iron.
Very gentle touches against a straight edge gave me the detail I wanted.
As it is a different type of foam I had to be very careful and move quickly. I found that one out the hard way .

What I did here was attached the chest piece to another piece of foam I have cut out for the shoulders and spine of the costume.
To make the hole for my head, I measured around my neck allowing an inch for movement. I then cut all the way to the bottom so I have an extra slit so my head fits through it. I then added the spine and a couple of other bits of foam so it looks mor like a one piece suit

I have been able to find a way of attaching straps to the body armour that didn't involve using craft foam... Using an old pair of trousers, I have cut them into strips about 18 inches in length and glued some thick card into the middle then glued on some velcro both the the end of the strap and to the body armour. so when the armour goes over your head, you can then pull the straps round from the back and attach them at the front.

I have also attached the 2 shoulder pieces at an angle so they sit perfectly on the shoulders

I have now began to construct the gauntlets. Take 2 small black shin pads and get 2 pieces of 1.5mm craft foam and glue them together using spray adhesive.
Once this dry, cut out 12 blades for the gauntlets 6 for each one.
cutting out 2 strips and gluing them them to the shin pads, you can then cut out 6 slots in that foam so you can then slot the baldes onto the shin pads and that will give then some support before you glue them on.

Then take 2 more sheets of black craft foam and measure from just above the wrist to an inch or 2 below the elbow min was 6 inches and measure the circumference at both ends so you have the cone shape of your gauntlets.

you can then cut 3, 1 inch wide slots in the gauntlets as shown below.
Im going to use velcro to fasten it . one piece under the shin guard and the other on the reverse end of the gauntlet.

Looks like its coming along very nicely. I like how the gauntlets turned out, very simple.

I have managed to finish the Gauntlets. Using plenty of hot glue and Velcro that I cut from some pads that I'm using, I was able to get the look just right

Last night I Began attaching the leg armour to the jogging bottoms I bought for £6.00 from the local Sports shop.

Again with the use of hot glue and patients, It is really starting to take shape. I had to stuff a pillow into the tops of the bottoms and use a rolled up towel fill the legs this was to ensure that I had got rid of any creases so the craft foam would sit right.

I think I'm almost finished now.

Some pictures of getting suited up will be next

well guys here it is as a finished product. I have attached the cape using velcro and it works well would love to know what you all think

This looks nice, man!

Good work... Trying to create a Batman costume that way myself right now.
Some german members around here having some advice for buying the cheapest / easiest materials? Just asking...

Thanks man... I just use an old camp roll mat for the main armour, I also used craft foam for the bat logo and gauntlets. The whole costume cost about £80.00
