Hot off the press:

The 'Burbs was a formative movie for me. I can literally watch and rewatch the film in one sitting. The humor was just right, almost too over-the-top, but it always just held back from Griswold or Naked Gun levels of slapstick.

Things I love about this announcement:
  • Seth McFarlane is executive producing. I love his humor in The Orville, but he needs to not be the main writer, which he will not be.
  • The original writer of the movie is co-exec-producing...hope that means the tone will be right.
  • It's filming on the Universal Studios backlot like the original film did!!!
But Keke Palmer, really?

At least that was my initial reaction, but then I gave it some more thought.

Her performance in Nope is really inspired, as she runs the whole gamut of emotional states in that film, from pure terror to unhinged angry. She has shown what she can do in committing hard to a role, and I'm really actually looking forward to watching her gradually come completely unglued like Tom Hanks did!

I LOVE the Burbs. Great movie. I'm not sure how it could play out as a series though. Once you know the Clopecks secret, the story is over.

The Burbs will always be a part of my youth. Long live the 80s. I'm with Sluis and Psab though. Not as optimistic as Halliwax and not as spunky as Funky...lol

Quite excited for this. I was born in 2002, so I grew up watching this as one of many favorites on VHS. Definitely underrated.

Why?
It would be nice if there were more original TV series put into production rather than relying on old IP to cannibalise for extra streaming "content".

Yo rumsfield! i don't think they will ever capture such a wide range of different actors like the film did. Nothing can top Rick Ducoman's performance!

Oh yay. A remake of a 35 year old movie that nobody remembers.
I can’t wait for the remake of Welcome Back Kotter!

Little did Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher know in 1989, that some day they would both be characters in the Wonderful World of Disney...

To me, The Burbs is one of the best movies ever. Seriously. I remember seeing it in a theater at night. And the movie's final shot was at night. I tend to like movies like that and seeing movies at night. Sadly that theater is one of those that is no longer around.

The Burbs is a perfect movie to me similar to Clue. The Burbs has the male adults that are basically still kids. What seemed to be the perfect neighborhood. I didn't see the trailer so seeing Princess Leia as the ultimate wife was awesome. The impact of this movie was so much that I named a pet after something in the movie. I could go on.

A TV remake? I'm very doubtful that it will capture the magic of The Burbs. It would have to be on the level of Stranger Things. Which will be very difficult.

The fun of the original was heavily dependent on the cast, and they aren't coming back. (In fact most of the cast has already died!)

The storyline was only thick enough to sustain one movie. If they make it a TV series then it's gonna be mainly built out of new material.

So, yeah. This reboot might be good. But there's no reason to link it to the original.
