The Book of Eli machete pattern - FREE

For whatever reason, my post to the junkyard will not take. Mike, if you check in here still, please talk me thru the process to order outside the junkyard.

The wrap is the paper cord.

I'd have to get some visual verification on that because not only does Premiere Props say it is leather but I was contacted by someone who bought several of the original pieces and they also verified the wrap IS leather.

The paper cord is very very close to the best blow-up look I can get, and looks dead-on on my second trial wrap on a non-Eli handle--(my first try is on page 4, #97, on this thread)-- but if you have confirmed leather from an owner of several pieces Art, then I stand corrected.
Was the owner able to give you any measurements or further details ?

Here's what rolling a strip of leather smooth side out looks like as a handle wrap that I mentioned a few posts up.

I freehand cut the leather and at the beginning it wasn't an even width, as I got to the end it was pretty consistent and I was even able to get the edges to line up. Almost gives it a worn/cut look towards the bottom where they line up. This dark brown leather is also probably more of a 2-2.5ish ounce weight.

I've also been searching around and found that Leather Cord USA sells a 1/4 inch (6mm) round leather cord by special order. Using that and maybe opening up the seam on it ever so slightly might work to, but its pricey at $130ish for a 50 yard roll and a 4-6 week order time.

I don't want to fight about it... and I agree... the paper cord has a VERY similar look. I don't know how willing the owner would be to share more info (he is a member here) but it can't hurt to ask.

No fight from me Art, I am grateful for your information, and thank you.

Looks like Cheech is on the right path, thanks for sharing the photos.
Cheech, does the wrap as you have it there feel dense enough for a grip?
Do you think the inner cord will be needed to give it a more solid feel?
Or would a wider strip and/or tighter twist accomplish that?
I will start experimenting with a few different variations and try to contribute something useful.

Shame about the paper cord tho--inexpensive and easy to work with--ah well...

I'd say firmness wise it's comparable to the rubber grip on my Buck Knighthawk and diving knife, For wrapping the handle I don't think you'd have to wrap it around an inner core/cord or for doing the end knots just 'random overlap'. If your wanting to do actual Turk's head knots then I think they'll be a problem and you'll have to glue/wrap it to an inner core cord or get that 1/4 inch (6mm) cord. You could theoretically with this twist method tack it down with some small brads as you go and the 'twist' cover it up, which may come in handy if you have to use multiple pieces.

I was jsut thinking maybe its a strip rolled.. You just sold me on it.. Although i think the leather is thinner

Might not be screen-perfect Rob but I think it looks great, love the weathered blade and the leather handle wrap fits it nicely, congratulations ! And again thanks for starting us all off with your shared designs, Bill Z.

Thanks for the info here. I am making this knife/machete for my banker as he is an enthusiast of this movie. I am a blacksmith, and have a waterjet in my shop. I plan to cut the pattern you have provided here and then forge it to attain the proper shape, and metallurgy. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to visit my website. hotmetalworks dot com. Thanks.
