I want to sculpt a prop that I will later cast. I need to be able to have the entire sculpt able to be cast (top, sides, back front, and bottom). What should I buy so that the bottom of the sculpt can with stand the process?

If you can give us an idea what you are making we can maybe offer suggestions. i.e. what size it is...what do you want to mold it in... is it organic or synthetic.... any bits of information you can give will help... there loads of sculpting options at your disposal.

We need these things before giving advise ;)

Good point, Cyberman. Here is something else to toss in as a tip for you Jedifyfe. Some materials react badly depending on clay to what type casting material. The reaction can just make things into a gooey mess.
What to avoid I leave to people with more skill than I.

General info on what I have done in the past.

Mask making
I usually sculpt in Roma clay of various hardness for making masks which I sculpt on my lifemask . All my final molds were done in Ultracal and then I used a cold foam for the final mask.

I am going to attempt to scuplt the sole part of the Back to the Future 2015 NIKE shoes. I then want to get a mold made and have them reproduced in clear rubber. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'd sculpt them in Chavant modeling clay or even water based clay first of all... once you completed the sculpt create a waste mold using some firm type of silcone rubber with a supporting mold jacket (plaster)

Then create a resin master plug (a first pull from that mold) which is then sanded and cleaned to perfection. Then i'd create the master mold in the same type of firm silicone rubber with a fibre glass support jacket.

I'd use a clear firm silicone to manufacture your soles but before pouring it in apply vaseline to the molds surface to prevent the two materials sticking :)

Cyberman has really the best way to make your mold.

I use Roma Plastilina, no sulphur and you can come back to it anytime, it doesnt dry out.

And for heaven's sake, don't make the mistake I first made using "Air Dry" Clay. Way too much shrinkage. :p

The trick with water based clays is to keep it moist (wrap it in damp towels and cling film) then it won't shrink. You need to mold it while its still soft though (not in the dried state).

Since no one else has suggested this, how about an epoxy clay? It will dry hard and can be polished smooth.
