The Best Movies of All Time - How much do you agree??

On a whim, I googled "The Best Movies" just to break it down into the simplest terms possible, and clicked on the very first Google result (top rated) to find the above result, linked here. Top Movies - Best Movies of 2019 and All Time - Rotten Tomatoes

In my experience, rarely do critics scores reflect my own opinions, or the opinions of most fans, hence the vast discrepancies of the Rotten Tomatoes "Tomatometer" compared to the "Audience Score". It's a strange phenomenon that there seems to be such a large disconnect between film critics and the everyday moviegoers. Films the vast majority of the general public love and are widely acclaimed, but receive a low score by critics, compared to high scored movies by critics, only to receive little appreciation by the audience as a whole.
Why such a disconnect? Who are these critics? Why does their opinion differ so much from the rest of us? Why do they matter more than the fan base that spends the money? How much do you agree with them? Is Black Panther REALLY the BEST film of all time?? I can think of so many films that are infinitely more impact full, meaningful, that don't even make the top 50 list.

Right? I can think of SO many other classic films that have affected the culture of the time or been otherwise impact-full rather than Black Panther.
Hello, what about Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Casablanca, Gone With The Wind, etc. Really? Blank Panther is the number 1 film of ALL TIME?? EVER???

No way are 90% of those movie in the top 20 of 100 greatest movies. All these sites are terrible in how they rank stuff. Everything is bought and paid for to drive up ticket sales and gossip.


Jojo Rabbit should be on the top 2019 films list.

Just for example. Regarding Star Wars. The last Jedi is highly rated among critics while the general audience has a low score. Then with Rise of Skywalker it’s quite the opposite. Low rating on critics yet the audience score is quite higher.

Those are just according to users of RT, so obviously the results are skewed. The fact that most of the movies on the best of all time list are from the past couple years shows that. I don't agree with that list at all, but it doesn't bother me because its meaningless. The way they collected their data is so biased that its not really much of a list.

Episode V of Star Wars should be on there, so should the second movie of Indiana Jones showing that man is mortal. Sometimes Rotton Tomatoes messes up as they did in this occasion.

This came up the other day as I was scrolling my list of purchased movies on the Vudu app, which shows the Rotten Tomatoes ratings. It was quite shocking to see some really terrible or mediocre movies having significantly higher ratings than some really popular, well done films.
Case in point, Tombstone - 73%, Bridesmaids - 90%.

75% of the movies are from the last 10 years, so clearly skewed. Likely tied to RT and how long they’ve been around (~20 years).

Best ever creates a hugely subjective criteria.

Part of the disconnect between critics and movie goers is the general dumbing down of america. That, and the amount of choices of entertainment. In the 70's you had go to the movies, play outside, or sit around the house and watch 4 channels total of TV or read something. The options today are virtually endless.

People today don't want to think and they want it spoonfed to them. Who needs substance when you can have load of explosions! Good things are more and more the result of smaller or independent makers which don't get the advertising push of the dreck that's put out.

My hope is that places like netflix can change that. I've found so much there that's good that wouldn't see the light of day elsewhere. Same with prime. You have to hunt for quality anymore and people don't want to make the effort.

They get scored by the users of RT and those users tend to be young. The overwhelming majority of them weren't alive when the original Star Wars came out and probably weren't around for the prequels. These are the same people who would never watch a black and white movie, just because it's in black and white. These lists are completely useless.

Only about 5 of those belong on a Top 100 Movies Of All Time list (the other 95 are conspicuously missing).
The other 15 on that list are "things to watch when there's nothing else on".

I like what I like. I don't think lists like this are definitive in any way because what a group of people consider great may not be what I consider great. I also don't think earnings make a movie great.

Every 21st century film should not be on the list. I'm not saying their all bad but name one that created and imprinted themes and images that helped shape our view and our pop culture.

When the subject comes up I think of movies such as Wizard of Oz, Gone with The Wind, Universal Monsters, A New Hope....etc. No 21st film comes to mind because 99% of them are a variation of these classics in some form.

Kill Bill, volumes 1 & 2
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Mad Max: Fury Road

That's just off the top of my head, there may or may not be more.
I don't judge movies on pop-culture relevance or box-office take, though. I judge them on story and aesthetics, and technical difficulty where applicable.
