The AWESOME custom communicator contest for the RPF!

The time has come for the custom cummunicator contest. We're trying to make this as fun and friendly as possible.

Here are the confirmed prizes so far.

A set of Mark X medical tricorder circuit boards with hand scanner circuits from gmprops. Most currently seen in this thread.

Next up, we have TWO sets (1 per customer) of Spock ears from Steve Neil who made them for TMP, fresh from the Nimoy molds. Seen here.
Welcome To My Website

Next up again TWO (1 per customer) DS9 PADD kits from Sulla. One is the Gabriel Bell PADD and one is the Dr. Bashir bio-PADD. Seen here. http://www.therpf.com/f13/get-your-star-trek-padd-kits-before-holiday-over-101339/

Also, a 36" x 12" USS Enterprise E or USS Defiant or USS Voyager MSD from bobatrek from his site here... LCARSCom.Net | The LCARS Computer Network | A Star Trek Fan Site

And GATORBAIT9696 has donated a custom plaque to one of the winners. We ALL know his awesome plaques!

I also have a limited edition, long since retired ceramic beer stein with Spock on it. Not a figural mug, but rather a portrate. I don't have a pic of it at hand, but will try to get one up soon.

And I also have a set of metal chest badges from 09 Trek. Command, science and medical. These are NOT the QMx badges, but the ones from overseas that had been on eBay for a while. They are oversized at 3.25 inches tall, but would be nice for a custom stands or something.

So far, so good right! Well, what about rules, we all need rules, right. I'm trying to make this as friendly as possible. So here we go.

The contest starts on November 29, 2010 and will run through December 26th, pictures go up on the 27th/28th and voting from the 29th until the 31st with a winner announced on Jan 01, 2011

This competition is open to all registered RPF members.

1. A custom Star Trek communicator. Not a replica of anything we've seen on screen. (We've had TONS of those already)

2. You may make it for one of two categories.

A.) Flip type hand held. (Ala TOS)
B.) Chest badge communicator (Ala TNG)

3. You may enter only ONE communicator in the contest.

4. This can be a Federation communicator, or an alien communicator
(An alien communicator must be identified as which alien race it belongs to)

5. It can be a hero or a static version, do your best as you will be judged by your entry.

6. No cut-a-way communicators, just a finished, "in tact" piece.

7. You can make the communicator out of any material you wish.

8. To be fair to the majority, you can not machine parts for your communicator. To those of us who do not have access to a lathe, we still need a shot at winning!

9. You must enter a NEW design. You can not post a communicator that you have previously shown off before.

10. Backgrounds. None! No fancy backgrounds for the communicator that could set a ‘tone’ and push the presentation over the edge. Just a simple picture of the communicator in a neutral setting. You may submit up to three (3) photos of your communicator.

11. Voting will an open vote where the creator is identified by taking a pole, which will be handled by the moderators.

12. I can enter the contest too. :lol (Did you see some of the awesome prizes here!?!)

And lastely.... HAVE FUN!

A big thank you to Art Andrews who has worked very hard with me to make this possible and the entire staff for their assistance.

what about including traditional design elements into our custom design? say... like a perforated metal plate or lid, as long as the design is original?

Ouch. Tight deadline. I'd hoped to participate, but I've got a lot on my plate this year. Guess I'll dig into the junkbox and see what might fall together quickly. If I make it I make it...

Happy to see this contest up and running. Sadly I won't be able to participate due to my LONG retail holiday hours at the moment, but I just cannot wait to see the entries. Good Luck everyone:)

Can we use pre machined parts such as bits n pieces from hard drives and what not?

Yes!

Even though I am providing one of the prizes, may I enter?

Yes! (It's only fair since I'm entering too!)

Yes!

So I guess a dollar limit was never set.

No!

It's a tight deadline in for me as well, but then again, Starfleet personnel work best under pressure! :lol

cool beans... I echo the retail hours sentiment... but I might give it a shot. We'll see if lightning strikes!

I've been waiting on this contest, but want to clarify this one rule.

An open vote meaning open to the public? Meaning anyone one can get as many of their friends, family, and whole other forum memberships to vote for them as possible?

Or open as in entrants will be identified with their entry but voting is only for members? If so what happened to the anonymous entry rules?

Or am I totally missing the meaning. I need some clarification if possible because this might be a enter or not enter rule for me.

Open to the public, anyone can vote, with the creators identified, as directed by the moderators. It helps bring people to the RPF, which bolsters us as a community, which in turn brings revenue to us, which in turn allows us to hold contests, which in turn allows us to ultimately support one another.

I have no problem with this. The most awesome communicator will win, and having more people vote for it is even better! :)

I know some people don't like this rule, but then again anyone can choose to either enter or not based on what they want to do. There should be no hard feelings either way. It's all about choices.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess all future contests are out for me then. I considered playing by that rule and getting my modding, gaming, 3d modeling, etc. forums to vote for me but don't think I'd feel right if I did get enough people to vote for me to win knowing for a fact someone else's was better. I truly hope the most awesome comm wins though and good luck everyone.

Nope. :( The winner will be the person with the most friends/family members that they can get to vote. I've been in contests like this and that's always how it goes.

It's good that it brings people to the RPF but I'm out. I don't participate in populatiry contests. :(

Good luck you guys!

>>>clip<<< It's all about choices.

Ah man, and I'd already started on something......

I'm afraid I stand with Mercury and Orange_Blend on this one.
My choice is not to enter if those are the voting rules.

But good luck to those who do enter. As always, look forward to seeing the builds.

Shylaah

yea... same here...
i wanted to enter, but was hesitant to do so since there was no dollar amount set, which i think is one of the worst rules, since members here who have money coming out of their ears can hands down build a better comm than someone like me who is living month to month.
but the "popularity contest" rule just sinched me not entering... its the most unfair of the rules.... as was said, people who are on multiple forums can just tell their friends to vote for them, and get enough votes to win.... its just like the dozens of "vote for me on facebook" posts that have been here in our own OT forum. :(
