TFA Graflex Research (That's a Graflex, right? Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

Yes, I noticed the same: with the fx clamp installed (and the tabs present) the gaps are there, which are not visible in the current prop pics. The thickness of the sheet metal of the fx clamp is 0.4mm.

so u don't think they used the fx clamp?

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

I think in the Entertainment section in one of the TFA threads someone posted a link to an article where one of the prop guys from TFA said that they used modified commercially available lightsabers for parts of the duels and to get the blue glow on the actor's face. Those sabers were most likely MR FX sabers. I'm sure there is some legal reason to cover up the Graflex logo on the clamp so to solve that problem use the clamp from the MR saber.

It's been mentioned they used FX sabers, meaning a hilt with a light up blade that they likely built themselves. They did not use a commercially available replica

I DO think they used the fx clamp. But they must have taken off the parts underneath the bars.

the fx clamp has that brassy tiny to it?! I never noticed before I'm going to have to look into this

so Roy, when you going to manufacture these suckers!! ;)

They would definetly need to probably glue it down a bit then, unless being pushed under the button f the bars is enough tension to keep it flush and in place.

Because it came loose on the Launch Bay version shows that it is necessary to glue it down properly and that pushing it underneath the side bars isn't enough.

Will you be making a smooth eye socket as well? I forgot to see if that was even on the saber in the film.

I was looking and didn't see it, I could be wrong because I was primarily looking at grips but also quickly looked for the brass eye. as of right now I don't believe the brass eye has been on screen "yet"

The only thing that gets me about the launch bay one coming loose is that the part that's looks like its loose is flat or strait, if it was the fx clamp it should still be kind of curved.

The FX clamp is also much thicker than the overlay that we see lifting up in the Launch Bay photo. That's also why I don't think the LB saber uses an FX clamp.

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

It's possible they used an MR clamp first, on 1 saber, but then used the Laser cutter/engraver to cut sheet metal for the other sabers. Sounds easier that tracking down half a dozen FX sabers when you've got all the materials you need right in the Prop shop.

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

OK, so are there any pics showing a non-smooth glass eye housing? Like the real Graflex one?

Also, a recap for TFA buliding:
1: D-ring same as ESB.
2: Grips slightly shorter than ESB, riveted.
3. No graflex logo. May be dif clamp, may be a veneer.
4. Glass eye housing is smooth.

Did I get it all? So to make a TFA I gotta monkey with the clamp and the glass eye?

The Launch Bay saber has a standard glass eye frame with the knurling. Also has a veneer / extra layer over the clamp.

Thank god, that'll save me a few bucks at some point in the process!

I'm so ready to just throw up my hands and say "ANH top, ESB clamp, TFA bottom hybrid saber!" :lol

What do people think of trying to sweet talk someone to just make a non-logo clamp (just the part with the logo, not the bars or lever). Or would that not be accurate enough for everyone? It would certainly be a cleaner, simpler solution, but I know uber-accuracy is many people's goal.

I was hoping someone capable of making these would chime in...

1. D ring is same but kobold looks to be thicker and has countersunk flat head hex screws.
2. Grips have various lengths and height depending on scene. Finn's version seems to have roughly 1/8 inch gap top and bottom. Rey's version has no gap at bottom and 1/8th at top. Grips appear to be riveted but could possibly be using flat hex screws in an m-6 size.
3. Dunno for sure
4. Glass eye housing appears still knurled. Only the Wired photo has the smooth housing. Have to wait for Blu Ray but I think the Wired photo was a stunt hilt and that glass eye was to hold in the blade. (Purely conjecture)

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

What did I do on New Year's Eve? Spent time looking for Luke Skywalker's hand and lightsaber with friends. We compared different DVD versions of Empire Strikes Back studying frame by frame to try and see if we could identify what the heck fell out ahead of Luke before he got hung up on Bespin's Cloud City weathervanes. No, it was not his blaster as he did not loose this in the fall. There was 1 minute and 47 seconds of time that passed between when Luke lost his hand with lightsaber and when he fell off the pylon.

As a kid, we thought it was a piece of hardware broken off from when Luke hits the weathervanes but now I'm not so sure. I think the intent of the scene was simply to show the depth of drop that Luke would fall if he decided not to hang on for dear life. But with the wonders of BluRay, the thing that falls looks more like a lightsaber.

Still frames reveal what looked like a cylindrical object falling down into the clouds. Could this have been his lightsaber with hand? Of course we speculated into the new year as to how his lightsaber may have ended up in the same chute and dump port that Luke fell into and out of. I was hoping that others in this forum might have better still imaging capabilities when examining the BluRay. It sure looks like something cylindrical but I'm not sure if the object attached to it is Luke's hand.
