Hello everyone. After building the orb from Guardians of the Galaxy thanks to Rpf member EIN, I decided that I would like to build each infinity stone object. I already made the aether container from the easter egg after Thor: dark world and since I already have made the tesseract, I figure that making the holder as seen at the end of the Avengers would seem like the next step. All this is being rendered on my IPad Air and printed on my Makerbot Replicator 2

So.. I'm running into a small issue. I need 5" diameter, 1/4" thick clear tubing and I really don't want to do glass. Everywhere I'm looking, they want an arm and a leg. Any suggestions?

Realized that there were some parts not quite as accurate as possible. So made a few changes

I personally like the iPad version better than desktop version. The problem though is that the iPad version isn't good for organic shapes... mostly geometric

The second half of the main tier is done. Each half takes about 8 hours of print time.

How many metres does it take to make it, I am considering a 3d printer but thinking on cost, it looks great. !, so mainly a general question.

    Thanks

    Richard..

Not sure on the length it has used but it has used about half a 2kg spool of 1.75mm filament. A single spool of Shaxon brand filament sold at Frys Electronics costs about $27 after tax. Keeping in mind that this thing is very large, that's not too shabby. I predict that it'll use about a spool and a half to print both ends of the holder. I can print an entire Iron Man helmet and not even use and entire spool.

That is looking really good. You've got some serious design talent.

What at are you planning for the actual tube?

I found a source online that sells plexiglass tubes in the diameter I need ( 5" od & 4 3/4" id) it'll cost me about $40 for a 36" length. Granted I won't need that much but I won't be short on length either.

The last component for the first end piece is done. Gotta sand, paint and buy the tube to align it all.

Good news and update. Just purchased my acrylic tube from estreetplastics.com for the holder... should be here by mid next week. As soon as I know that it fits properly, I'm gonna start printing the other side.

After I make a complete and finished prop, I will be selling the 3d print files to those who are interesred. I'm not sure on price quite yet. My life has become far too busy lately to make kits to sell.

Have you thought about submitting the 3d files to shapeways? I think you can setup a store front there and you get some of what they charge to print it (don't quote me on that as I am defiantly not sure).

Not likely, but selling 3d files? Most likely. I'm getting married in January and trying to buy a house as well. Combine that with full time school, I'm gonna be too busy to make a run

Hey gang, I haven't forgotten this build with all the holiday stuff, college, wedding planning and other builds, I've been terribly busy. The good news is that I started this up again and plan having it completed by the end of February

What size cube do you have here? I'd like to work on one and have something like this to display it in. :)
