  • 3D printed small arrowhead
  • 1mm aluminum rod
  • 8" x 3/16" wood dowel
  • 2 feet of string
"#2 Assembled & Primed": SOLD OUT

HOW TO ASSEMBLE:

If you're getting the raw kit, these are the steps for assembly:

(more photos coming soon)
  1. Carefully sand the resin parts in 400-grit, taking care not to snap the pieces.
    PXL_20240718_182122404.jpg
  2. Gently clean them in soapy water with a soft toothbrush. (Use gloves after this step, to keep skin oils off the plastic)
    PXL_20240718_183103284.jpg
  3. Superglue the dowel into the base of the large arrowhead.
    PXL_20240718_183430531.jpg
  4. Cut the 1mm aluminum rod to about 1/2".
    PXL_20240718_183251614.jpg
  5. Using a toothpick, put a small dab of superglue in the tiny hole at the bottom of the SMALL arrowhead, and insert the aluminum rod all the way. Don't overdo it!
    PXL_20240718_183650747.MP.jpg
  6. Before gluing into the large arrowhead, test fit it. The rod will probably need to be clipped shorter. Don't push too hard!
    PXL_20240718_183717261.MP.jpg PXL_20240718_183755360.jpg
  7. Using a toothpick, put a small dab of superglue in the tiny hole at the top of the LARGE arrowhead. Carefully insert the small arrowhead and rod into the large arrowhead, taking care to align them before the glue dries.
    PXL_20240718_183921097.jpg PXL_20240718_183841036.MP.jpg
  8. Prime.
    PXL_20240722_232734219.jpg
  9. Paint.

  10. Wrap the string around the dowel at the base of the arrowhead, using CA glue to help anchor it (it helps to have CA glue accelerator for quick curing). You want about 1" to 1-1/4" of wrappings. Consistency is NOT key.
    PXL_20240720_052313740.jpg PXL_20240724_154552571.jpg PXL_20240724_154636640.MP.jpg
  11. Weather.
    PXL_20240724_182419097.jpg
  12. Using scissors (yes, really!), cut the end of the dowel off at about 6" from the back end of the string wrap, for a total length of about 8-3/4" (22cm). Work the scissors around the thickness of the dowel, rather than try to cut through all at once.
    PXL_20240724_183421673.jpg PXL_20240724_183301527.jpg PXL_20240724_183341408.MP.jpg
  13. Paint the exposed wooden end in black, and then smash it on a hard surface to flatten it somewhat. This makes it look finished, but not machine-cut.
I am happy to answer questions in this thread.

First off, I took the closest shot I could find, rotated and overexposed it so I could see as much detail as possible:

1718641544014.png brighter.jpg rotated.jpg

Notice that it is a DOUBLE arrowhead. I did some research into arrowheads of South American tribes, and I found NOTHING even close to these. So this is clearly made up by Production with no historical basis. The closest shape I could find were some European ones, but nothing with the double-barb like that:

Notice also that the arrowhead has a string or wire wrap...about 20 turns of about 0.75mm-1mm thickness, I'm guessing..

Further screenshots give a sense of the size of the shaft.

I believe it could be as thick as a 1/4" dowel, but that makes for a larger arrowhead. I'm thinking we're looking at 3/16" (4.75mm) diameter.

These are my printing prototypes:

I'm thinking that the wrap will look better as real string rather than printed coils, which might look a bit too regular.

First test prints should be ready in about 3 hours!

Two please

LOL that was fast! I want to stress that these will NOT be metal or any kind of casting, but resin printed. Since 3D modeling is not my strongest suit, there are some imperfections that will need to be sanded and filled.

As a result, I'm thinking of offering them finished or pre-primed only, but we'll see how it goes.

And thanks for the support. Glad I'm not wasting my time on something that has LESS THAN ONE SECOND of screen time in the movie!

Hey all:

I'm taking down interest for a run of RESIN 3D PRINTED temple darts from Raiders of the Lost Ark. From this scene:

View attachment 1838575

Subsequent posts will show the design and build process, and I thought I'd solicit feedback along the way.

If you are interested in getting one (or more) of these darts, please reserve your space by letting me know in this thread! At this point I have no idea n a price and there is no obligation until I have a finished prototype.

Goes without saying… in

Looking at the orthographic views, I think the top arrowhead may be a bit too thin...but I'll see how it looks when printed.

And for now, I'm guessing at the size (total length with wrap: 3"), because all I have are eyes and noses to compare it to. The prototype print will tell us much.

Yep, I have learned a great deal from the first round of prints:

PXL_20240711_192942650.jpg PXL_20240711_193115889.jpg
  • The smaller arrowhead breaks right off too easily...very little holds it to the larger arrowhead
  • The size feels about right. What do you think?
  • The dowel attachment is a nice tight fit.
This means the following changes need to be made:
  1. Thicken the smaller arrowhead.
  2. Thicken the tip area of the larger arrowhead.
  3. Print the two arrowheads separately.
  4. Put a 1mm hole through both arrowheads for a piece of 1mm aluminum rod.
Luckily I have a bunch of the aluminum rod left over from a previous project!

Appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
Bill

Nothing too unexpected. Looks great on the dowel. I’m going to study it more closely for size but looks good at first glance.

Now we're talking!

PXL_20240712_154457226.jpg PXL_20240712_154607396.jpg PXL_20240712_154902771.jpg

The rod was a tight fit, so glue was not necessary!

I still see a couple small problems, and I want to finalize sizing and experiment with some finishes (possibly copper patina!). So I think it's still going to be a couple weeks before I am ready to offer darts and announce final pricing. I'm trying to keep nicely finished darts in the $20 range. If the price to finish it becomes too high, I will offer unfinished kits. Would love to hear feedback on what kind of availability is worth it to you!

More participation means lower cost in the long run! This is not a profit-making venture for me...just loving the hobby.

Thanks for your patience, I'll keep things updated here!

Bill

My man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like finished. I'll take kits of course, but I have so many unfinished kits.
