Teen's High Def Pep Adventure! Mk. VI helmet on its way! [[PICS]]

Hey guys,

You may have seen my other thread (http://www.therpf.com/f24/teenagers-foam-mk-vi-suit-60-done-149581/index2.html), but that is, temprarily on hold... Everything gets in the way, and so I just need to find time to do it when the house is empty and I have space; those are hard to come by.

So for the moment I am spending my time pepping stuff - I started with a war machine helm. HD. Crap... it looked doomed from the start, but I think i pulled it off... not bad for my first EVER bit of pepakura... what do you think though?

And it only just fits!!! >.<

A little bit of detail...

Overall not too bad... I've started on the boots, until resin and stuff gets here...

So what do you guys think?

Great start on chin.
I looked at your faceplate and thought what causes some flaps to flap open.
I looked my first pepakura helmet (and it happens to be WM too) for comparison.

If I may suggest:
1. Use scribber tool
2. Run lightly a round pencil underneath a flap to make the flap a little bended before gluing.
3. Good to have numbers on the print so you can match/align it better.
4. Slow down when gluing. Try about 3cm per time, work on other parts then get back again

What kind of glue do you use? It might look like the paper absorb some liquid and warp.

Thanks for the advice, I will try these on the rest of the boot... A key thing I think is that this was a high detail helmet, therefore it was more tricky to pep...

Hey Matt,

Not sure what glue you are using, but I can't recommend this glue more highly for pep.

Scotch® Quick Drying Tacky White Glue | Staples®

Not only does it have a really fine tip that allows you drop the smallest of dots on your tabs, but it dries inside 20 secs. Combine this with a hot glue gun on standby, and this REALLY makes pepping something like this out EASY.

Im using Loctite Super Glue 5g | Screwfix.com on the boot... seems good enough... I was using sainsbury's own brand, it was crap :L

Aw...do not (read: NEVER) use superglue on paper.
Triton's suggestion is right, use PVA glue (a.k.a. white glue)
It doesn't have to be 3M (Scotch) though ($$$)

I tried using pritt stick and PVA, but neither worked - superglue is the only thing that actually stuck the paper... and why cant you use superglue?

Superglue is perfectly fine to use. It's all I used on my builds when I was peping stuff.

Pritt (brand) or glue stick normally do not have the strength.
PVA is cheap and clear when dries. it started already in gelatinous stage, so it will not warp the paper (or at least less warping effect). It dries longer that superglue.

My experience/comment with superglue:
1. More, more expensive that PVA (ka-ching)
2. Superglue is more liquid in early stage, so the paper will absorb it and create warping (the effect of wet paper)
3. Since the tabs are small, sometimes the excess superglue goes to finger. So either your finger stuck to paper, to other finger(s) or anything else. It's not good situation. With PVA, when it dries in your finger just roll it over or wash it with water, so you always have a clean finger almost everytime
4. My superglue brand says: odorless, can be use for porous and non-porous material....paper, Hm.... I don't think so.

But again, treat this as my personal opinion to you. If you are comfortable with superglue, please do so.
I read somewhere in this forum, there are several kinds of PVA. Perhaps you do trial and error too in choosing PVA glue

Pritt stick or equivalent is utter sh*te, I agree...
The superglue I'm using is gel-like, and it's not absorbed that much...
Also, because superglue holds stronger than PVA, I don't use that much at all, pretty much a small dot per tab, so it doesnt go onto my fingers....

I'll give it a go on the remaining bits of the boot...

I use hot glue, it sets in seconds and is odorless, plus it has the added benefit if you screw up you can reheat it and reset it. Win Win in my book

if I were you I'd start over with that helmet and use tacky craft glue. And no do not use hot glue, That recommendation for Pepakura is full shenanigans.

how do you figure?

works fine for me. Guess you don't know how to use a hot glue gun properly with pep... :confused

I use hotglue for pep, so I take offense to saying it is "full shenanigans" when it works quite well.

Use what works best for you, i use loctite superglue, but that doesnt give me the right to say pva or hot glue wont work, is what you feel comfortable working with

I use hot glue..its been working well for me and its cheaper..i build most of my upper armor,helmet ,lower torso.with a 5 dollar pack of glue sticks i still have half.and i use it..man do i use it..lol...when you mess up you can always fix....ihad lots it mistake that i fixed like i made a mountain fold instead of a valley then had to unglue ...can't do that with regular glue...everyone has a different opinion.though use whats best for you

Woah, I have not updated this in a while... Sorry about that, I had my 16th birthday, and a festival... Well, quick update, I am getting my resin and fiberglass tomorrow, so I can start on the boot and War machine helmet... I had built the hand completely but it was damaged in transit, so that is on hold until I have finished my helmet quest...

What is the helmet quest you ask? Well, I have already built the HD war machine helmet, and intend to build an HD Mk.V, Mk.VI, and Mk.VIII... I will modify the Mk.VI to make the Mk.VII when/if I mold it.

Yesterday, I started building the HD Mk.VI yesterday... this is my progress. Hopefully it will be finished and fibreglassed tomorrow...

Apologies for the crappy lighting, its 1am here... cant sleep because I have an illness, probably double bubonic plague or something... I need to put in the second eye and ears, but I think I made good progress, that's about 9 hours work... Yes, I am aware that it isnt great, I may or may not scrap it... Opinions?

One final word before I go... While it is an honour and I am very humbled to have such talented builders on this thread, please do not argue! :darnkids While it is fine to share your personal preferences, don't put down other people's methods, something works for everyone; for me its loctite superglue, for stealth and Don Juan it's hot glue, don't put them down because their results are bloody incredible; better than anything I could ever do!
