Excuse my ignorance on this, but I think I read somewhere that the "ribbon" on the Yavin medal was a WWII British Officers neck tie. Is that correct?
Actually probably not WW2 and probably not an officer's, the same tie is still current issue and has been for 110 years. But up to 1950 they were only worn in small numbers by officers. From 1950 onwards (to the present day) every single soldier in the British army has owned one as either part of their service dress or parade uniform.
in 1976 it's likely they were picking up some of the huge numbers left over from 1950s-60s national service surplus.
Bear in mind they come in a few colours, it's the brown/drab one you want, not the greener olive or the sand, and the modern ones (post 1990s) are the wrong dimensions and shade. Anything 1950-1990 in brown is good.
