hey RPF!
this is my first post as well as the first piece I've ever actually taken through to completion.
with all the projects i have begun and abandoned in my frustrated pursuit of perfection, this is a sizable milestone for me. I had a strict deadline (halloween) and a friend depending on me to get it done and that was just the push i needed to say, for the first time ever, "It's good enough" and move on to the next step.

Re: Bane Mask (TDKR) custom fit costume

I did my best to catalogue my process, however, i did neglect to photograph some of the steps.

the sculpt was built on a sloppy plaster copy of my friend's noggin that we made the alginate route.

i used monster maker's palsticine clay, wooden dowels, cardstock, craft foam, and found items to craft the sculpt. i coated the thing, layer after layer, in a full can of crystal clear spray when i was done.

Re: Bane Mask (TDKR) custom fit costume

i built a 2 part fiberglass mold. the base coat was 50/50 resin/bondo, once that was tacky the deep valleys and sharp angles were filled with some shredded glassmat saturated with resin and then i layed that up two layers thick when it was tacky. the mold wall was water based clay and the registration keys were some rejected 9mm bullets i cast. i just used vaseline for mold release.

Re: Bane Mask (TDKR) custom fit costume

this was my first time working with latex and i found out that i couldn't slush coat the fiberglass mold, it never dried. i ended up tossing my first sloppy pull, cleaning the mold again and brushing in thin coats, about 8 of them.

Re: Bane Mask (TDKR) custom fit costume

the coil hoses are cattle fence wire wrapped over itself. the textured ones are siliconed skinned dowels.

Re: Bane Mask (TDKR) custom fit costume

I painted the mask with home-brew rubber cement paint ( oil paint, paint thinner, rubber cement )
assembly was primarily done with hot glue and super glue.

Re: Bane Mask (TDKR) custom fit costume

i misted the whole thing with black spray paint to dull the colors

Re: Bane Mask (TDKR) custom fit costume

That looks pretty damn good! An excellent build and I'm sure your friend was pleased with the final result.

Outstanding work! Really, your seek for perfection in your craft has lead to a beautiful prop.
Congrats.

If you've watched the film then you would have catched that it's for a breathing apparatus, meaning that it's a large wind pipe, no problem though if you haven't, and if you haven't go find it at walmart and buy it or rent it, it's a great film :D

Actually, they say in the movie it's for the pain from his injuries...implying that it pumps anesthesia of some sort.

Amazing job on the mask, incredible build!

My bad :facepalm , I just gathered from the film it made him easier to breath = less pain, but yeah, way off topic..

Are you planning on making the whole costume?

If, by any chance, would you consider doing a run of these?
Depending on the price, I would love a raw cast.

thanks for the kind words!
fulmetal... i'm very flattered. i wont be trying to pull any more off the fiberglass mold but i am considering making a plaster mold and trying again in the spring :)

Re: Bane Mask (TDKR) custom fit costume

I have a question, What do you think would be better of molding and casting the sculpture,
Hydrocal plaster or just fiberglass resin? I'm trying to make a mask as well but I never used Fiberglass resin before. I just use good old plaster materials. please respond. That would be very appreciative to me. And I love the mask, very well detailed and everything.
