Taking rust off a metal helmet--suggestions?

I bought a metal replica helmet 3 years ago. I had it in storage for the last year, and recently took it out for display. The helmet is black metal, and while in storage, has accumulated some rust on the surface area of the helmet. Is there a tried-and-true method for taking the rust off aside from sanding it off and/or painting it? It's a great piece, and I don't want to risk messing it up.

Thanks in advance.

Hi m8

One of the best thing is have come across for removal of rust in recent years, (I restore old cars from time to time in my spare time,) is a stuff called Por 15 metal Ready rust remover. ItÂ’s a liquid that can be used on a cloth for light rust, or immerse it for heavy deposits, and it takes the rust right off. It literally wipes light rust off metal without leaving and marks like wire wool or sandpaper

When it was first suggested to me I laughed, as rust removal paints and stuff like that never work, but this did.

ItÂ’s imported and sold in the Uk through Frost.co.uk, or as itÂ’s a US product I am guessing most large car spares places might have it. ShouldnÂ’t be hard to find though.

Hope that helps

:)

A mainstay of firearms restoration is 4/0 steelwool used with a light oil. If used judiciously, it will remove rust without removing the bluing. If your helmet is blued, naval jelly will remove the rust, and the bluing.
