SyFy Goes Off Script With Reality TV

Isn't that what they've been doing for a few years now anyway? Reality TV and movies that would make Roger Corman cringe like Deathsquito and Miniature Sharktopus vs. Pythonconda?

haha yeah, they've been doing it for a while with "ghost hunters", "who wants to be a superhero", and "destination truth".
BTW Whats up with them showing wrestling?
I get that (pro) wrestling is fiction, but science fiction? :lol

Like all "Reality TV", I'm sure it will be absolutely real!:thumbsup

Absolutely REALLY real, no less!

Oh yes, so very real I'm sure lol...

That's right, I forgot about those shows....

I'm still angry with the SyFy channel for changing their logo and now for canceling SGU. Because heaven forbid the Science Fiction channel have programs about science fiction/fantasy but instead start carrying shows like wrestling, "reality tv" and the Saw movies, all 50 of them or whatever number they're on now. I'm not saying that the SciFi channel was necessarily good tv a few years ago but it definitely seems to be going down the drain real fast recently.

10 shows? It may was well just be called the "We Used to give a crap about good entertainment channel". I see more good scifi on TCM half the time.

I agree, I just don't get why they changed the logo, it makes no sense to me...

I agree! :thumbsup

You've got to give them credit for their dedication to destroying the channel though. :lol

Hahaha...:lol

now they have a cooking show... with marcel, one of the douchebags from topchef..... really??? REALLY????!!!! how the **** does a cooking show have ANYTHING to do with sci fi, OR sy fy ??!!

man i remember back 20 years ago when it was nothing but reruns of old twilight zones, thunderbirds, incredible hulk, and the rest of the classic tv shows that were so great..... they should have just kept the same programming they had back then. and it wouldnt suck so bad. i would much rather watch an old episode of twilight zone ive seen a million times than octoshark vs gazorzilla.

My bet is they ditch the current formulation and come up with something COMPLETELY different within the next five years. Anyone remember when Spike used to be TNN -- the Nashville Network? I sense something similar coming here.

I remember when they had the marathons of those shows during the day even back a few years ago. They'd have Dark Skies all day or the new In Search of. VH1 Classic's getting that way now too. If it isn't movies it's crap reality shows. When i first found the channel it was all videos and then That Metal Show came on which is fine. These channels don't seem to understand that people don't want a variety of programming on one channel, we want channels dedicated to the same thing.
Now Spike has a show about coal miners by the clowns who came up with Ice Road Truckers. They always pick roughnecks or backwoods folks to make idiots out of.

I'm sick of channels like Sci-Fi, History and the Discovery channel. All they have on now is dumb things like American Morons with motorcycles or the Swamp Idiots.

The only thing I ever watch on them anymore is Mythbusters and even that hasn't been on lately.

The only channel that still has some decent programming on it is the International History Channel and most of them are old shows.

They had no choice to change their Logo from Sci-Fi to what it is now, the word Sci-Fi and similar was coined by Forrest J. Ackerman (Author of "Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine") and the "Sci-Fi Channel" name was in Violation of his copyrighted phrase, so they were forced by law to change it from what I understand, not by choice.

I was wrong, I just looked it up... they "rebranded" their Logo because they could Copyright "Sy Fy" but not Sci-Fi since that was already Copyrighted...

I agree though, I personally preferred the science fiction/fantasy shows and movies they used to offer rather than a lot of the junk they show now...

The logo switch was also so they could stop pretending to be a channel about science fiction stuff, and go whole hog into the reality TV direction. You wait. Just wait. They'll ditch ALL premise of having anything to do with science fiction or "imagination" and eventually just become Yet Another Reality TV Channel.

Most of the specifically targeted channels of the 90s (Discovery, History, TLC, Animal Planet, "SyFy", VH-1, MTV -- technically 80s but still part of the trend) have all headed into reality TV territory. It makes sense. They're dirt cheap to produce, they make just as much money as any of the other shows, and I'd bet they require a fraction of the work of even one of the usual "educational" shows.

Most of these channels have abandoned their original "mission" and now just do the same stuff or at least very similar stuff. And there's no reason why any of them would change any time soon. I suspect the only thing that MIGHT change is their brand eventually.

Syfy's newest press release:

We bring you scripted, choreographed "sporting events" & pseudo-science* based "reality tv" shows for idiots to challenge their already limited sense of reality as well as once a week movies that make every other movie better by comparison. Every six months, we kill another of our limited scifi programs to be replaced with more of the above.

*Pseudoscience is a claim, belief, or practice which is presented as scientific, but which does not adhere to a valid scientific method, lacks supporting evidence or plausibility, cannot be reliably tested, or otherwise lacks scientific status. Pseudoscience is often characterized by the use of vague, exaggerated or unprovable claims, an over-reliance on confirmation rather than rigorous attempts at refutation, a lack of openness to evaluation by other experts, and a general absence of systematic processes to rationally develop theories.
