SW Screamin 1/4 Boba Fett

Its a good model.....I love the NX-01 too.....I think I have a Screamin Darth Vader vinyl kit in my closet ,that is 1/4 scale I believe...its been a while, but if I remember it didnt have any paint codes with that model either....hmmm....look forward to your progress pics.....Guy

You like the bigger on better, huh? I didn't think size mattered...

I should just turn it over to you... I'll probably never build the damn thing anyway!
Size can matter ;)

But really I've just always had my sights set on the 18" Screamin Boba Fett, I like it best of all the BF models.

If u'd like I would be more than happy to take it off your hands :D

I have a vinyl Darth Vader and Emperor model kit that I have plans on building in the future.

I hope to get some more work done on BF tomorrow or Monday. Just depends on how much of my work I need to do I can get done so I can have the spare time to work on him. I will take pics of my process with him and post them here as I go along.

Painting him may be a bit since the only closest hobby store from me that sells Tamiya paints is a few hours drive which sucks cause that means I need to save and plan to take a trip up there.

Yeah , I feel for ya, went and done the same thing, so I went to Ebay and got several paints, shipped to me for a little cheaper , cause it usually takes 3 days to get them in the mail, I figured ,it was at the beginning of the week, I would get the paints in before the weekend hit , so I could use that time to work on them, got tired of going to hobby shops, that found out they were either closed on a weekend (Sundays) or closed down permanently...Hobby shops are getting scarce indeed:cry

I'll throw in my two cents as well. Since you don't have a proper hobbyshop nearby you can go a different route with painting. If you have a Walmart, Meijer or other big box store nearby hit up the automotive and the craft areas. In automotive pick up a can of auto primer. This will work just as good on vinyl kits. Then hit up the craft section for AppleBarrel or FolkArt acrylic paints. There should be a large selection available. You will also find a good selection of quality brushes there as well.

The vinyl dragon by Pegasus below was painted with everything I described above.

I would also suggest attaching him to a base. Figures can be notorius for getting knocked over. A small wood plaque would work well. Once you have the figure built, trace around the feet on your base. Drill a holl through the base in the middle of each foot print. Fill him with plaster. Once set, add screws from the bottom of the base going up into each foot.

I agree Robiwon , those paints really did good , I dont have any pics yet on my Star Wars Rancor , he turned out so well and has a slight wet look from my Tamiaya clear, it really shocked me on how well the acrylic paints were, and I used car primer as well...LOL....I wasnt sure if that was something I should have done, but the results were fantastic...nice work by the way....Guy

Thanks for the advice on using acrylic paints. I have never really used FolkArt paints but I have a lot of Americana paints.

I will definitely give them a second look but I still plan on taking a trip to a hobby store here in a month or so due to the fact that there are some other things I want to get my hands on.

I thought you had the 1/4th scale which is why I said PP2 but yeah the 1/6th changes it to ROTJ. Which will be much easier for you when it comes to reference. If you wanted you could even paint it up like the ROTJ Special Edition which is essentially the ROTJ paint scheme except the helmet is painted like The Empire Strikes Back helmet(despite a few other differences that I won't go into).

This page should help you at least get an idea of the colors to use.

also, 4 is only two keys away from 6 so it is easily acceptable that you accidently typed it, so you dont need to resort back to blonde yet. Brunette looks good.

I have one of these too!.! Its always eluded me...

Will be watching your build before i tackle this one myself....

Long ago -i had saved a few pictures from online somewhere as color helpers.. ..Love how to color shows on these...maybe these can help somehow.

Looks like you have some great pointers to start with. I too would suggest painting with acrylics.
btw, don't know how you are with paper but I have a 1700mm (67") Boba Fett pepakura file if you really want a challenge. =)

I know you weren't talking to me but, a five foot, seven inch pep file?!? How much? And could I scale it down by half? I would love to build a sculpture of Fett, but not life-size.

I have been so grateful for all the awesome advice and pointers everyone here has given me so far. It's really made me think and plan out how I want to do this Boba Fett model.

Question since I am a noob with vinyl models. Are acrylics suggested because they are more flexible type of paints? Just wondering.

Btw I am always up for a challenge :D

Acrylics do not react with vinyl. Enamel paints will. Enamel can soften the vinyl, not dry completely, I've even heard it can eat through the vinyl.

Boba Flint is correct. The oil base used for most enamel paints causes a chemical reaction when it comes into contact with bare vinyl, and this reaction prevents the enamel paint from drying or curing fully. This is the first I've heard of enamel paint damaging the vinyl, but when the subject is chemical reaction such a result wouldn't surprise me.

However...once you've primed the kit thoroughly with a good acrylic primer you can use enamel paints if you want to, since the primer creates a barrier between the enamel paint and the vinyl. That said, if you're planning to use an airbrush you're probably better off sticking with acrylic paints; I don't own an airbrush, but I've heard cleaning them after using enamel paint can be a real chore.

Thanks for letting me know.

I was figuring it had to do with the two not reacting well to each other but I wanted to know exactly why acrylics are used.

I took some more progress photos of Boba Fett and will upload them tomorrow since I have a ton of work to do atm :(

For the most part he's coming together really well with just a few snags I need to figure out, but I am hoping by this weekend to start having him built then its just the fact of figuring out the paint I want for him and learning how to airbrush a bit better.

look forward to seeing the progress pics, I believe you could airbrush it ,if the right primer is applied , however any of the vinyl kits , I just hand painted those with straight acrylic, airbrushing vinyl kits , is something I have ever tried, I like using an airbrush for the enamel paints for my plastic models....I am curious to see how that works........

Being careful trimming the vinyl?

You know if you heat it first, it cuts much easier.

There's that old addage about "blood, sweat, and tears", but ry to avoid those if you can!

I don't know where the middle of nowhere is, but if there is a Micheals, or a Hobby Lobby out that way, you could probably jump into an airbrushing class if you think that would help. You'd be painting on a canvas, but the technique is about the same. That's how I learned to airbrush. :)

Youtube is your friend for learning how to do just about anything. I have a 1/4" one sitting around in a box still. Started it but havent finished it up as of yet.
