What did they build the floor out of for the movie set when Vader ( the Emp. did later as well),come out of the Shuttle and walked across? Its a black/charcoal colored metallic looking floor..Ive always wondered what type of flooring it was and how it was made...anyone know? One reason I ask is because I imagine a garage or a workshop floor with that look would be pretty nice and something different.Should this be posted in studio modeling?Wasnt sure where to put it.
:)

I found this pic on Darth Phaetons website...ok if I use it?If not I can remove it.

its probably the soundstage floor thats been painted and waxed about 50 times, looks like the old warehouse floor where I used to work, my manager was obsessed with waxing the floor to a mirror shine.

If its a soundstage floor, cool, but may be hard to duplicate at home somewhere...yeah its super shiny. Not sure how many coats of urethane clear and Zaino would need to buff it out like that.
Would still love to dupe the looks of it if it was cheap and feasible enough for the workshop.Dont want to be waxing it everyday though.
:thumbsdown :D

Well your garage floor is probably concrete, thats all our warehouse floor was, we used an industrial floor wax, don't remember the name been about 15 years now, when we relocated the warehouse to a new shop we pulled up the shelving units and the wax was about 1/2 thick.

Does anyone have this pic in high resolution?

I recently bought the Star Wars Complete Visual Dictionary (though I have very little interest in the Prequels), and the Contents page is a great 2-page spread of this pic.
In fact the pic above is slightly cropped... on the full size one you can count 34 individual Stormtrooper actors :D And this is before the matte painting artists got to work later on, to make hundreds of Stormtroopers ;)

I absolutely love this pic as I suspect that my original Stormtrooper costume may be one of these 34, and it would be great to display with the costume... I've tried officialpix.com with no luck.
Can anyone please help?

Cheers,
John
PS - Sorry to de-rail the thread topic.... I think I remember seeing some behind-the-scenes shots where the crew were wearing slippers or socks so they wouldn't mess-up the amazing shine on the Docking Bay floor :confused

The floor appears tiled in the background..wonder if that was paint lines?Or if those were the actual poured rectangular sections of concrete on a soundstage or set they used and it served the purpose more so for the scene shot?

Storm, not sure of any more pics in higher detail.I found that pic on darthphaetons website, that he sent me the link to earlier.Lots of cool pics on there you can look at,may not have the resolution you need.
You need his website link? if so its www.darthphaeton.com if anyones interested.

I would also like to see it.
after looking at this pic, I realized that the ROTJ Troopers have white heels on their boots.
Never knew that before. :rolleyes

Probably a vinal composit tile (vct) from Armstrong Flooring, Use a 40% wax coating from Bettco and a high speed buffer Perfurably a burnishing machine. But you realy need to pay attention with those suckers. LOL

On second thought, after taking another look at the photo the squares are about 24", a standerd VCT tile is only 12" square. I am going to have to say painted concret and a good wax.

I remember reading in the making of book that all the crew had to wear booties so as not to scuff the floor, and they still had to constantly buff it between shots. So it probably isn't practical.

If you have a bare concrete floor you can easily recreate the look by painting it the desired color using a special paint call 'Colored Concrete Densifier', and then applying a clearcoat over it which can be easily maintained and is scuff resistant. You'll probably only need to reapply the clear coat every year or two if it sees heavy use.

This system was designed for large areas and is popular with warehouses and indoor car parks (without the clearcoat).

I'm having this treatment applied onto the floor of a retail outlet I've just established and its not very expansive. The company where I got my system from is call SealSource.

Here's a summary of the SealSource product I'm using:

A Colored Concrete Densifier is now available from SealSource International, LLC. The SS ColorSystem™ is a penetrating, chemical densifier that you can choose from a wide variety of colors. What sets this system apart? Two things: First, you have a chemical densifier that penetrates into the concrete and becomes part of the concrete matrix, sealing, hardening, dust proofing and densifing the top wear surface of the concrete slab. Secondly, you have colored pigments that penetrate with the densifier to achieve long lasting color. This hybrid technology combines the best of both worlds providing the decorative look of a mottled colored floor with the longevity of a chemical densifier. Of course this system is water based and completely environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Then get them to apply their 'SS ArmourGuard System™' on top of the colored floor and you'll get a clear and defined sheen on your floor.

When the floor on my outlet is done I'll post some pics. We're waiting for the concrete to dry properly before the treatment can begin.

Treadwell is correct. In Star Wars 365, day 32 -"...hallways with shiny floors -and they're always a bit of a headache. No matter how careful the crew was on A New Hope, always wearing white booties, the floors quickly revealed dirt that would be visible on film -therefore they had to be cleaned constantly."
