Superman statue - What pose would you use?

I am thinking of commissioning a stone or brass or bronze statue to be made later this year, and I am looking for some feedback on what a good pose would be. Please note, this isn't an interest thread, I don't plan a run of these. This is a one shot item that I am thinking of having made for my collection.

I don't really want to redo any statue that has already been made via mass market, so I am hoping some other Superman fans will hop in and tell me what pose they would use, and what material.

Right now, I am thinking of the cover from Action Comics with the Golden Statue oscar style Superman with the hands on hips, being made out of brass or copper. Possibly black marble, but I am not sure about that.

So... if you were designing a Superman statue, which pose would you want him to be in? The materials I have to choose from are marble, limestone, brass, copper, bronze and granite. I really don't want to do limestone or granite, but the other materials look pretty sweet.

If it helps, the estimate for the statue is about 12" tall. I don't want him too big or heavy. Makes it hard to find a place to show it off :)

Thanks guys and gals
Chris

I collect a LOT of comic statues.
Something of big blue in flight would be cool and unique, there isn't anything much of him in flight at all.
But not sure how that would look not painted as in the bronzed look.
I prefer statues painted.

If the illusion of flight could be pulled off, can't go wrong with something Jim Lee based........

I'd go with the classic fists-on-hips, legs-apart, head-turned-slightly-up-and-to the-left, cape-billowing-behind-him.

But, that's just my opinion.

I'd like to see a really nice, powerful version of the classic "breaking chains" pose, where's he's bound across the chest and just bursts them apart.

The exploding chains frozen in time would make for a great "Remington" statue feel.

Flying might not work out so well.... All the stones and metals I have to choose from are pretty heavy, and I would hate to have a fragile part in there to snap during shipping. They do have quite a few "hovering" statues that are already made though. I kinda doubt a stone or metal statue would hold up that well with a tiny acrylic rod somewhere though :unsure

I like the idea of the classic pose, but I just can't really decide if I want to get it done since so many others have actually done it already.

The chain breaking was my first idea :lol, the only problem is the chains themselves. If they aren't done right, they will look pretty horrid. Sort of a stone Doc Ock look.

I might go with bigger than normal chains though...hmmmm

Also, side note (and this floored me), I can probably have this done in, you guess it, crystal! I had no idea, but now the idea of a small fortress diorama is floating around in my head. White marble "floor" and control panel, and a bunch of little crystals in there. The only downside is I have NO idea where to find little tiny tubes to hold the crystals in :lol

Another idea I had was the parents statue that he has in the fortress. It's made of rock or grey/silver metal, and it's a pretty easy design to do. I just don't know if it's "Superman"ly enough to really be something to add to the collection.

So far all the ideas are sounding pretty cool. Thanks guys!

Chris, I'd like to see Supes with the eagle on his left arm, which is depicted in some covers and that is feature in the Metropolis park.

EDIT: Similar to this:

EDIT2: More like this:

EDIT3: the classic pose:

Curt Swan version. For me this is the ultimate Man of Steel, and I've often thought of having this pose sculpted, around 12 inches high.
Why there was never a kit of Swan's version, I'll never know.

EDIT: Oh, and I'd opt for bronze.

Like someone above mentioned, I like the idea of doing a small replica of the statue from Metropolis Park that was erected after his "death".

One hand on hip, the other holding Ol Glory on a flagpole. Symbolizes what he cares most about, not just his strength.

Crud, has been done.

How about a hanging statue like this:

I think it could be cool to go really unique (as far as I know) and go for this pose:

It would look cool next to a lamp at night. Kind of like a Superman Lincoln, ha ha.

Sounds like a great project!

I think when it comes to statues, there are so many variables for this like as u said....materials, scale etc.

I have never like Diorama pieces and always love a really great iconic pose. One I have never seen is the golden age original design Sups done as a statue. Here's a pic:

If you are spending the kind of time and money that it takes for this, why not show the man of steel in is original form?

IMO

I couldn't find a picture but I think it'd be cool to have the image from Superman Returns where he's catching the daily planet globe after it falls off the roof.

Not a big fan of the golden age Supes though... Always been a big fan of the silver age or Neal Adams one though. I guess it all depends on who you grew up with on the comics at the time heh.

There is already a statue I think of the SR Superman holding onto the globe.

I didn't think of the memorial idea but it seems possible. I think the only issue might be the eagle and keeping it to scale.

All great suggestions guys!

What about one where he is just milliseconds from taking flight; with his arms straight up, standing on his toes, his head looking straight up so that you get that nice chin view; very streamlined. Something similar to this:

Untitled-1copy.jpg

Obviously not in that style, but you get the idea.

OOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I like this idea!!!

There are a few moments in the original reeve movie that have him standing there tiptoed and about to fly off that would make a badass statue...

See, this is why I come here. Different viewpoints, different ideas, and they all rock.

Also just got an email letting me know that they can gold plate the statue (as well as bronze, brass or copper plate it), so it will be blingtastic :)

There is still a long time to go before I even think about getting the funds together for this, but in response to a few emails I am checking to see what the costs would be for more than one of these guys. I won't know for probably months, but just lobbing it out there for the people who caught up with me.

I thought another decent pose might be against one of his foes, like Luthor in the 80s warsuit from Super Friends or something like that, but it would be too hard, too expensive and just look too craptastic when it was plated.

Doomsday in gray marble might be kinda cool though, specially with white marble bone highlights :love
