Superman II, The Richard Donner Cut...

Aha, well the HD rip I have doesn't have special features, so I had no idea.

How was the first one supposed to end, then?
Basically the recap sequence you see at the beginning of the Donner Cut.

The missile that Supes diverts from the target and throws into space explodes and releases the villains and it ends with General Zod screaming FREE as they head towards Earth.

Okay guys Ive bitten. This is my second Superman 2 thread read and Ive never seen a single one except a bit of IV on tv. I know it's awful. Dive in with part 2? Or go for the whole thing in order minus the last.

I just gotta know now, you know?

Start with the first one. It is really great.

yes, watch 1 then the Donner cut of 2. The movies are a little dated effects wise, but are still great.

i hate to admit this but Superman 3 has grown on me over the years - mostly out the fact that the two stars, who are legend in my book, are no longer with us. That and the drunk Superman shooting peanuts at liquor bottles (try getting that in a movie today) then battling with the good Clark is fun stuff.

I have an issue of WGA Magazine where they interview Chris Reeves about a Superman script Warner approached him to do after Quest for Peace. Chris talks about how he refused unless they could get Donner to direct it. Donner was somewhere in Lethal Weapon land (doing 1 or 2) but to everyone's amazement he agreed to doing another one, adding that he'd love to bring in Shane Black (writer of Lethal Weapon) who was a Superman fan and always wanted a crack at the character. Arnold schwarzenegger (this would be around Predator time) was also in talks to appear in a cameo as another Superhero who helps Superman "in his darkest hour". Reeves talks about how this was to be his farewell to the character and that the story dealt with Superman returning from retirement to deal with an alien invasion. To quote him "It's War of the Worlds with an aged Superman fighting for Earth's freedom". Unfortunately it wasn't long after that Chris fell from his horse. He seemed excited about the project in the article ending it by saying "kids still approach me all the time, their eyes wide saying It's Superman. iT'S REALLY HIM." i know a lot of actors who would be bothered by this sort of thing, but I consider it a real honor to touch the lives of young people in a positive way. Some of these kids may not have anyone in real life they can look up to and I'd always remind myself of that everytime I put that costume on."

Reeve was such a great guy... even now I get choked up thinking about when he had his accident and when he died :(

I would LOVE to see a scan of that interview!!

I got it but my scanner is busted. It's got a couple of really nice photos of Chris standing under the Superman Marquee at the premiere and another of him in his house at his piano. i'll scan it at the office when I get a chance.

That would be awesome!
I read from various sources how close Superman V got to being made. The best source is from his appearance at Dixie Trek where he spoke about being ready but the Salkinds never called despite being in pre-production. So sad we were robbed of the opportunity to round the series out...

Until I watched it on DVD last year I hadn't seen Superman 3 since I saw it one time in the Theater and I hated it when I was a kid. It is still mostly dreadful to me but those scenes you mention--especially the good/bad Superman battle--were fantastic! Almost like they were out of a different movie. Reeve really outdid himself.

you don't know how right you are. The Drunk Superman and Clark/Supes battle were from the Braniac/Red Kryptonite script that was developed before they hired Pryor to be in the movie. I have no idea who wrote the Red Kryptonite draft, I've even heard it was Mank's stuff but I dunno.

Lol-- I had no idea! I could totally believe it was written by Tom Mankiewicz--now I want to go back and watch that scene.
