Leto works much better than I would have thought from the silly still pics. But we'll see...cautiously optimistic. And he doesn't seem to be imitating Ledger at all IMO.

Gotta say I honestly can't see (hear?) any basis for comparison either. Leto is very capable, it would be a shame for people to just draw comparisons and leave it at that. Not to suggest that's what people are doing here, but I could see it happening in a more general media reception sense. Still have some major reservations about Leto's look and a few other production design aspects, and hopefully Will Smith can manage to play someone other than himself. That said, I'm pretty keen to see the trailer for real rather than a shaky camjob, the overall tone and delivery moved the bar way up for me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgWf_vETKMQ Aside from the first fake laugh when he crashes the mob's little "therapy session", all of Ledger's "genuine" laughs sound really really different from Leto's laugh, for the rest I can't judge from literally 5 seconds of footage. But I can't see why on earth would Leto imitate Ledger, that's the last thing anybody wants, and I think both Leto and Ayer know this very much. That's why they made it so different probably.

Ledger had a hyena sounding laugh, Leto has a Gorillaz' "Feel Good" cackle going on. In the trailer, Leto Joker is basically going to torture someone and breaking their psyche using a whisper to add tension to what is to come. Ledger Joker talked in near-whisper at times, but mostly up-front cockiness because he knew what he was capable of and didn't care what anyone thought about it. I'm betting Leto Joker might be loud and jerky like an uncontrollable psychopath, judging by the set video of him slapping Harleen Quinzel. He'll probably be over the top in voice and gestures once we see him in full action IMO.
I actually try not to compare each incarnation and take them as they are, because each one is their own thing. They try to adapt the characters to "today's times" and want to make them relateable, even though the last Joker wasn't too long ago.

No, you're definitely right...Heath was the first person to do a joker laugh.
Eyeroll. Its the Joker. He laughs. There are different versions of this laugh. Leto's sounds nothing like Ledgers. And they both don't sound like Nicholson. And yet again, no one sounds like Mark Hamill (unfortunately).
Obviously you're unhappy with Leto as the joker, that's fair enough, but its a bit silly to let that inform your opinion on something that clearly isnt true. (the laugh being an imitation = false)

It's funny that everyone is jumping on the laugh when I never mentioned the laugh. It's the voice, the inflection - the way he talks.
I have no issue with the casting - so you can jump to assumptions that I'm unhappy with that all you want. Leto is a very talented, Oscar-winning actor who does a lot for any part he plays... which is why I'm surprised he seems to be borrowing a page or two from Ledger's book. Unfortunately, that and the look they chose for the Joker is terrible... and, well that has been met with that reaction from quite a few people.
We've got a long way to go before we see more footage and can judge based on that - rather than the one line we've gotten. Which is why I said it seems like Leto's doing a Ledger impersonation.
Really if you notice since Ledger did Joker everybody and their brother are copying him,most all of the ones in the animated stuff look like him at least,maybe sound a bit like him so if this guy wants to copy too fine.

Then clearly you need to look up Troy Baker cus the man deserves props for being a potentially good successor to the animated joker role

I thought he did a good job as the Joker in Arkham Origins, but it was more just "reminiscent" of Hamill's performance, rather than a full-on reproduction. It's influenced by Hamill, but Barker has his own version that's not exactly the same.

Never said the same tho. But just meaning that quality wise he is just as good and i for one really loved his joker voice and wouldnt mind if het got offered more roles.
Lovin the trailer and i for one am very excited about this.
Looks like the Joker is wearing what could be a purple leather jacket at about 2:15 in the trailer. Still... not impressed.
