such thing as quiet blanks???

this question is killing me

is there such thing....theres gotta be....if so what whats in em

Maybe for a revolver or other gun that has a manual mechanical advance or is specifically designed around having very little energy to recycle... But for most all semi auto there simply has to be that 'pop' and sudden release of energy to cycle the gun into the next firing sequence...

They do make 22 caliber mini crimp blanks that for the most part amount to a regular bullets primer, but again they are for revolvers or special blank guns... I have never heard one, but I have shot a bunch of 22 shorts and they sound like balloons popping so I images the 22 mini crimps are even softer...

It's still Gun Powder.

Gun Powder goes bang.

There are electric special effects guns, they still make noise though.

?

Yes
It really depends on what you want to use the blank for. In a film or to scare someone you would use the gun powder type for the BANG. If you want to be able to dry fire a gun without noise you would use snap cap type ammo. Here is a link that has them. This is just one kind many different companies make these. I have a few that I got from bass pro for a old 357 I got from my grandfather when he pass years ago. So I could dry fire it without damaging the firing pin. So I hope that helps.

That's not a blank. There are no quiet blanks.
A blank is also used for the muzzle flash, the gas expulsion and the recoil.
What are you trying to do?

There are a variety of "loads" for blanks. Some for more flash, some for less, some for redder flash/whiter flash, more/less smoke, etc. Noise has never been the big issue since that was usually added or modded in foley or added by computer post production.

Semiautos and full autos are more temperamental and the art of restricting the barrel to permit the right amount of gas return (i.e., gas operated bolt as in the AR15.M16/M4, etc.) or blowback energy (Tommy gun, Mac 10's, etc. using a blowback operated bolt) requires a delicate balance of blank power vs. barrel restriction and throw in lightened bolts, softer/shorter operating springs, etc.

As previous posters have said, all true gunpowder based blanks make a bang, some a little less than others but still a bang nonetheless.

Right, they don't make the same sound as nice boomy sound designed effect, but they are far from quiet.

I have a blank-firing Beretta and the loads I have sound like real gunshots. But I've heard other blanks that sound more like cap guns. But quiet, no.

ya sorry i didn't explain what i meant

what i was wanting to ask...for automatics ie pistols/machine guns ect....do they make blanks that give a nice bang...but not enough for the actors to use hearing protection like for indoor gunfights

While I've never heard of quiet blanks, I have seen some quiet "non-guns" used on set. They're basically custom-made guns with an electronic mechanism that uses magnesium cartridges for muzzle flashes. The sound is pretty minimal.

Oh, yeah, there's definitely that kind. There's a pop, but not one to make your ears bleed.

In one of the Return of the Jedi documentaries, they show Ford at the bunker firing blanks from his blaster. Just a crack and a little smoke.

With an electric special effects gun you get, smoke, flash, recoil, ejected shell but less noise than a blank. I've been around them when we were shooting inside, around flammable material and in close quarters. Blanks will drop sparks, as some of the powder ignites outside the chamber and barrel because there's not as much resistance to the outgoing gases. They still have projectile of sorts - they have a cardboard plug or a wax squib that keeps the powder in the cartridge.

This is still dangerous.

Ask John Eric Hexum and Brandon Lee.
You can't. They both suffered Blank related deaths.

The report is not the dangerous part. Yes, ear protection is important, and easy to provide so it doesn't show on screen. The fact that you are using live rounds of any type is much more of a concern though.

Before we go any further, is this a hypothetical question or are you actually doing something that requires this?
