Studio scale X-wing/TIE pilots - what are they?

Specifically, what are the heads? The bodies are the pilot from the Airfix 1/24th scale Harrier, but the front part of the head seems to be either a different kit part or some sort of sculpt.

I took these photos at the recent Profiles auction:

The back of the head in the second photo looks just like the kit part (albeit sanded smooth), so I don't think they just swapped out heads with another kit. I'm beginning to think the front part was a sculpt.

Opinions? Kit suggestions?

im no expert, but the front where the visor would be looks to have sanding marks, maybe they just filled it with putty and sanded to shape, and from the side, the front of the helmet was rounded and then they sanded it square to match the visor angle.
perhaps it was a motorcycle helmet.

Motocross helmets have been suggested before, but know one has published the one. The level of detail, and the intricate nature of it leads me to believe it is some sort of part. I do agree that the visor looks filled/sanded.

from the side pic, the two ear pieces and the stipr across the top are added on, if you look closer, there looks to be an attachment point for a visor, and has anyone looked at all of the 1/20 race car drivers helmets? At 1/20 the helmet would be a little larger than the figure, and here it seems the helmet is smaller than it would be for a 1/24 figure.

I think you're right, The bottom of the back of the helmet matches the Harrier pilot's. The gap at the back of his neck between the helmet and shoulders looks like it may be filled in and there's something stuck on just below it to extend the original helmet down to the bottom of his neck.

The front is probably a combination of filler and kit parts/scrap plastic

Gene, check out Cerney's posts on this thread: http://www.therpf.com/f10/x-wing-cast-original-parts-88172/index9.html

Humor me for a second...I did this in 30 minutes with some tape...clay..and a Screwdriver.

Shakin...not stirred.

I know its "off".

I know thats not the right SHIP part...but.

I bet its a Ship part, or something shaped similiar. I was originally thinking part of a cupola from a tank...or..a fender.

The rest is tape, and steyrene.....one less screwdriver, and some more time.

Looks like the model makers were trying to create the helmets seen in the design and storyboard drawings.

That would make for an interesting replica costume as well, using the helmet from the storyboards instead of the open face helmet they ended up with. Very nice find!

Wow, looks like that's exactly what they did. Always wondered why the model helmet differed so much from the costume helmet. Now it makes sense.
I have to get my Star Wars books out of storage.:cry

Lemmee rub my Bowie avatar up against yours there for a minute, CTF, just to ask Gene if there's, uh, any chance of more photos of that auction X-Wing?

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to ask that......:lol Answer - 13 posts.

Here are some more. I'll figure out how to post more later.......
