Studio Scale Ultra Probe

Well, it took me a bit to dust her off and re start a project I shelved over two years ago to work on Battlestar Galactica and many other projects.
This is the Ultra Probe from the Space 1999 episode Dragon's Domain. This replica is of the 5' shooting miniature.
I am in the progress of building all the tube frames as you can see in some of the picts. I completed the build thus far and primed it yesterday ( Tuesday Jan 24th). There are a couple little pieces still not IDed but I can add those at any time. They are not in critical areas.
I have a casting of the Command Module that Chris Trice, a well known Space 1999 replica builder and some one who has restored several of the shooting miniatures, that he allowed me to mold and cast.
His help is greatly appreciated and with out the ability to purchase the needed photos he had and the use of the CM to make a casting from, I would not have been able to reach this level or accuracy.

So with that, here is the intro:

June 6th, 1997. The Ultra Probe is readied for launch from the Interplanetary Space Station Centuri; It's Commander; Captain Tony Cellini, Astrophysicist; Doctor Darwin King, Radiation Expert; Professor Juliet Mackie, and Doctor Monique Bouchere in charge of medical, dietary and the psychological well-being of the team.

After being shuttled to the Interplanetary Space Station Centuri where the Ultra Probe ship was docked, The crew prepared for their long voyage into space. Embarkation and countdown continued without a hitch. Launch took place at 1200 hours on schedule.

So the longest ever manned space flight began.

I love Derrick Meddings, Brian Johnson and Martin Bower's work. Some of the best ship builds and designs I have ever seen :D Martin sure knew how to use EMA parts to make some of the most interesting ships.

I will update this thread as I progress.

Enjoy.

Nice job Mark, that looks great. I love them when they're nice and smooth with primer like that.

They all became Dragon Fodder :lol

But the ship survived :)

Do you really want me to type all of Doctor Russell's letter to the Space commision :love

"Where do you think he was trying to get to, out there, in his pajamas? We're nowhere. We're three months Eagle travel time to the nearest star system and he was going off on his own. Now if that's the act of a rational man... He didn't even take his toothbrush."

Nice.

Amazing what can be done with simple shapes like cylinders and spheres.... and some found kit parts.

Shaping up very nicely.

Oh my F'ing god. Red leader never looked so good. Your member image is making me hurt. :lol

" Helena. Nothing was proved."

" NO ONE can believe that I, Tony Cellini , Stood face to face with the monster."

And my favortie line " Maybe we'll get around to my sex life "

One of my favorite episodes. It goes to show you that you can still be crazy while the ballance of your mind is still intact. :angel

Yeah, EMA builds are nice but some of those kits hurt in price. I was glad I had four of the Tyrrell Elfs sitting here. They are used on BSG and Star Wars bashes but run $300.00 each. If you can find them.....
And one of the reason I stopped working on her was the frame work. I used brass and plastic tubes with the snap T's but it didn't work out well. So, CARBON FIBER came to the rescue..... I love that stuff. the only plastic on the frame work is the snap T's and transversals. All the stringers and verticles are CF.

I think is was like four or five 8 rads, 6 third stages from the Saturn V's and lets not forget the elusive 1/25 Chieftains from Tamiya. At the time some of the airfix kits used were NOT around and had not been for some time.

I believe you can e-mail Chris Trice through one of the Space 1999 sites. I don't have is e-mail address anymore. We stopped talking a long time ago.
He made me agree not to distribute the picts or I would help more. He is the owner of the negatives of the pictures he shot thus giving him limited copyright. The subject matter is still owned by Gerry Anderson and related companies that purchased the rights. So you need to talk to him. You will see more details as I complete the build in future picts.
It's a simple enough ship to build in one snese but hard in a nother.

Glad you like it. Yours is looking good :thumbsup

What an outstanding job Mark.

One of my favorite episodes and ships from the show.

You know, for all its reliance on miniatures and the sheer variety of miniatures from that show, Space:1999 is very underrepresented here on the RPF. Glad someone is doing something with the subject.

I have a casting of the Ultraprobe Command Module that (I believe) originated from Clif Erasmus (who got it from Chris Trice?). Anybody know the backstory behind it? Not a bad casting, my only concern was with the wall thickness. Should probably just fill the thing up with foam and get on with it.

Great. Another weekend project.

Gene

I too have one of Cliff's command moduals. Well worth it. The only thing is the rear plate is incorrect. I believe there was actually no detail there because it was matted to the rest of the Ultraprobe. Great work Mark. Cant wait to see it finished.
George :D
