Studio Scale Landspeeder project

MonsieurTox, man that would be incredible. I have a cg model of the cantina built from the original blueprints, which could easily be scaled to make just such a project feasible... just saying.

Moffeaton, this model is fantastic, can't wait to see more.

Thanks! Working on a couple things for a Comicon deadline, so I'm having to focus on them for the next two weeks - killing me, not touching this 'speeder at the moment, haha!

Very nice work on this, Jason. The 'studio scale' section is quickly becoming the most productive area of the entire forum due to projects like this. I'm a big fan of just seeing jobs tackled and not talked to death. Just good, solid, forward momentum out of you over the years, dude. Each new project topping the last...as it should be!

Well done.

Thanks, man! Coming from you this is a HUGE compliment, as you're a seasoned veteran of this 'ol place, harder to impress, and aren't one to heap praise just to do it. Inspiring words, my friend!

So saw this on the Blu-Ray last night:

Started researching the variations, so I can decided what to put into the master patterns!

And I realized why there are weird holes in the Landspeeder. Landspeeders? Were two made? One for the gimbal and one for street use? Sure looks like it.

Streetspeeder - it has no breaks in the fins on the port side, and on the starboard there are two

Same photoshoot (I think Edlund took these shots in 1978?

As it looks today:

Port side, modern era

Here's the gimbalspeeder - no grill holes on the starboard side, but a mount hole below and between the two large divots between the engine and grilles. The dent in the body and grills are also pretty severe on this version:

Gimbalspeeder:

Not exactly sure which one this is, but there seems to be a mount point on the rear as well, so I am guessing it's Gimbalspeeder, set up on a stand. Maybe this mount point was used in the rear projection shots they aborted?:
7.jpg

A better shot of the mount point on Gimbalspeeder:
8.jpg

Another weird thing about Gimbalspeeder are the cut outs behind the grilles - are these for headlights?
9.jpg

Which one is this? I think the Streetspeeder was used here, but the grille looks to be Gimbalspeeder. The well for Threepio's feet is present. With the damn special editions, most of the stuff I need to reference is crappy CGI. Damn Lucas.

Streetspeeder shot from vintage source - note what looks like a perforation in the screen of the port engine intake:

She was repainted, sadly, for TPM. The restoration is pretty good, but not perfect - the black smuding is all sorts of wrong, for one thing. It also looks cartoony now - too much like it was masked with hard lines (that coudl be the film stock softening things though):

Yeah! If I do an RC version, I'll add headlights to the thing. I have good reference on the Robin Reliant chassis, if that was used. I'll make a mock up in acrylic, but don't know if that would be robust enough for RC use. Anyway, that's just an aside. I want to nail down the model itself first. Perusing the Blu-Ray for more ref...

Gimballllllll!

Here's Gimbalspeeder at Anchorhead:

Two were built, for sure:

Apparently because this one (which became the Lars Family Speeder) was deemed too large:

So this proves my theory, from a certain point of view... Check out the port intake's perforated screen! Streetspeeder... but not exactly.
18.jpg

So that pic is the Streetspeeder chassis and body with the Gimbalspeeder grills. I now realize this means the grills were interchangable between the two speeders:
11.jpg

Both WERE used in Tunisia:

And indeed the Gimbalspeeder was placed on a stand for some shots (I assume the Tusken Raider's rifling through the speeder were a similar set up with Gimbalspeeder):

How many crewmembers does it take to power Gimbalspeeder?

And we can't forget the 1/4" stereoplug detail. I assume it ends at a Peavy amp.

awesome finds. By the way, you should trademark "Gimbalspeeder" seriously that should be its own movie. It would basically be Mad Max of Tatooine.

I'm not so sure the current condition is a restoration repaint. The TMP usage looked to me like simple color correction done in post, or perhaps a light misting of something easily removable like a watercolor, because you could still see the original showing through. If it was a removed misting, that could explain some weathering disappearing during removal.

pretty certain that the chassis used was the version for the bond bug , which differs slightly from a standard reliant frame. but the differences are minimal. had a few reliants over the years and would have loved to have built a full scale speeder on a genuine chassis but work / time etc. anyway, great project looking forward to seeing the end result.

Do you happen to know where I could get good measurements to recreate a Robin/Bond frame? It only really needs to look the part from the termination of the shell and downwards!
