Studio Scale Defiant (DS9)

Still working on the panel lines, and test fitting more kit parts.

wow - those are a lot of little details and panel lines. It always surprises me just how many panel lines (physical or painted aztec) star trek ships have.

So - after you draw them all with a pencil you have to scribe them all out with an exacto knife or something?!

How do you get the carved lines to be so straight? I don't have that much experience with an exacto knife, but I do remember that I would have to apply constant pressure and the slightest slip would cause the exacto to gouge a line across my piece.

most impressive. :thumbsup

Because of what it's made of (wood), traditional scribing won't work, so I'm going to use the tape/primer technique.

So basically I'm cutting thin strips of bluetape and taping over all my lines.

And then spray a few coats of primer over it, remove the tape, and voila! He's got nice, crisp, even recessed panel lines. I recall him using the same approach on his Ent-D. Worked great on that build.

Fantastic work you've done so far on this one, Rich! This is among my fave designs from the DS9/VOY era. I hadn't seen any updates on this project for a long time on another prop forum I frequent, but am very glad you're still working at it.

Can't wait to see more, buddy :cool

Very nice indeed.

May I ask, do you have a technique you'd be willing to share for how you cut and applied the circular mask lines?

I'm sorry that your hours and hours of work were enjoyed by me in only a few short seconds. It's incredible how adding the panel lines bring it to life. If you're selling these, I definitely want one
