Stormtrooper Oddities

I guess everyone has seen this already, but i cant belive i didnt notice earlier, maybe its because most of this scene you see the troopers from behind... but the scanning screw trooper with the DLT-19 and no E-11 holster is MNS :thumbsup

you calling me ODD?

I think the next TK bucket i build will be a Mr. No Stripes stunt version.

I wonder how many people will get it.

AANND if it is CRL compliant :lol

LOL! Nice find clutch! I guess that is "extra ammo trooper" now? :lol

Or supplies... or whatever is supposed to be there! Or like Myeek said, smoking trooper.

I like the smoking trooper. Also notice the gaffers tape holding his back plate to his breast plate. :lol

Here's a couple more I don't think have been mentioned yet here.

Another upside down hand plate armor here..

..and it looks like some more gaffer tape, this time it's strapping together the chest and back armor.

I love how it looks like the guard in the back is looking straight at the camera too.

It's a bit hard to tell but is the trooper in the second pic missing his belt?

Looking at all these oddities and all makes me think that QC in the Imperial armor factories is virtually non-existent and that discipline is pretty lax in the Stormtrooper corps. You'd think that Stormtroopers assigned to a pretty prestigious and cushy assignment like the Death Star would have some pretty strict officers and NCOs that would be extremely nitpicky about uniform regs, especially considering it was under the command of a Grand Moff and with Vader as his (presumably) XO.

As far as Mr. No Stripes goes, the "canon"/in universe explanation for him is that he's obviously wearing either a newer or older model of helmet that, at the time of ANH, was either being phased in or out. Judging by the fact that he seems to be seen primarily, or maybe only, in ANH he probably has an older model that he either likes so much that he doesn't bother to get replaced or just hasn't been issued a replacement yet. Who knows, maybe the Imperial Stormtrooper Corps requires that you replace all your armor out of pocket through a uniform allowance and he can't, or is too cheap to, afford the cost of a new bucket. Actually, that would a go a long way to explaining why see a mixture of armors throughout ESB & Jedi, not all Stormtroopers can afford new armor so they just keep on wearing their old stuff.

RB I would deffinately rather believe in your latter theory of troops paying for their own armor.

Your first statement scared me. About how they look bad for not being neat and perfect and how that doesn't make sense and all...

I thought, if GL reads this, or anything like it... we could end up with ALL CGI TK's in the OT!!! (n)sick:thumbsdown

Well, my theory on troopers buying their own armor is partially a joke but at the same it is also based, in part, on current US military practice as well as old/ancient military practices. In the US military you pay for your own uniforms out of a provided uniform allowance which doesn't always completely cover the costs of new uniforms. However, this only applies to uniforms and not things like helmets and body armor which are issued to and get returned when you leave your unit or the military but since we've never seen Stormtroopers (definitively) in anything but their armor it can be assumed that their armor is their uniform. Given that the Empire obviously spends huge amounts on their military, we can only imagine how much it must cost to build fleets of Star Destroyers and at least 2 Death Stars, it would make sense for TKs to pay for their own armor (at least any suit or replacement parts beyond their first) in order to try to cut costs in the military budget.

You know, someone really ought to write a Stormtrooper centric novel one of these days and incorporate theories like mine and others that help to explain some of the oddities that we see in Stormtrooper armor like Mr. No Stripes and other things. In fact, the novel should feature Mr. No Stripes as the main character, now wouldn't that be a hoot.

As far as my garrison Stormtrooper thing goes, hopefully Lucas doesn't read it and decide to "fix" things in the 3D release of the OT. Fortunately, I don't think that Uncle George served a day in the military in his life and so wouldn't be familiar with the uniform practices of garrison or HQ troops. Of course, the lack of uniformity and oddities with the troopers on the Death Star and what not could be also explained by that they're elite troops along the lines or modern day Navy SEALs and Army Special Forces who are well known for wearing and carrying pretty much whatever they want regardless of standard uniform regs.

Another oddities that's recently been bugging me is that they are wearing their normal clothes underneath the armor. After the trash compactor they ditch the armor and have their normal clothes on. I came to terms with this by saying the canister on the back is some sort of super vacuum clothes container.

Well..... I just spent most of my day, sitting in an airport terminal,..... and I read this thread from start to finish!

Now I want ******* ROTJ TK Armour!!!
