Hi all, just wondered if anyone could offer some help/suggestions please with a little problem i have ???

im near completing the grenade launcher section on a pulse rifle build im doing, the spas cage has been primed and had three coats of flat black which has been wet sanded, as suggested elsewhere, ive placed the pump grip in boiling water and opened it to ease it sliding along the channels in the cage, this works for a short time but seems to go back to its original width, which makes sliding the grip along the cage VERY tight, ive wet papered the inside of the grip so as its very smooth but this hasnt eased it at all.

as you can see in the pic, its tight to the point of removeing paint.

any suggestions ???

cheers

You could lightly sand off the plastic strips on the internal of the SPAS pump grip.

After that, just cock it back and forth 101 times. I believe even the originals lost there paint in this way...

Sorry, best images I could find (these have been repainted a few times, but you can see what I mean)

...Indeed even the SPAS 12 loses its matt grey finish after being used alot. You just dont see it on the cage, as the original SPAS 12 handguard is so long.

I had the same problem when I built my PR. Used a real SPAS cage and a deactivated Remington.

I used a block of scrap wood slightly wider than the GL grip and wedged it inside to force the grip apart. Then I CAREFULLY used a heat gun on the grip. Basically waved it back and forth across the grip to lightly soften it. Then let it cool for an hour, test the fit and tried it again.

I also, as was suggested above, lightly sanded the two strips inside of the grip.

The paint is coming off a bit on my SPAS cage but the grip slides nicely now and it gives a slightly weathered look to the gun.

Good luck.

ok fellas, thanks for that, i did file, then smooth sand a fraction off the grip strips, so maybe i need to take a touch more off.

as to the wooden block, thats what i did after letting it sit in boiling water for ten minuts, i stretched it over a block a couple of mil wider (allowing for spring back) let it cool down overnight but it just seems to go back to its original size, i tried again and even stuck it in the fridge to cool down :lol still tight though.

ill try sanding a bit more off the strips and "pumping" it a few hundred times to wear it in, you can never get bored pumping on of these :lol

thanks again :thumbsup

I use the rear "block chunk" of the demilled M1A1 receiver (I kept some extra long ones) pushed into the SPAS-12 slide-action sleeve. I then place the part in the oven at 350 degrees for about 2 to 5 minutes (or until quite hot). The receiver chunk acts as a stand for the sleeve in the oven. NEVER WALK AWAY FROM THE OVEN WHILE DOING THIS.

I repeat the process until the part runs up and down the handguard very loosely.

Finally, I take a Dremel to the lower part of the channel guides inside the sleeve and grind off about 1/16 of an inch front to the back on each side.

Don't be worried if the part is very loose in the beginning, as it'll probably tighten up a little bit with time. Very loose is better than just right.

Once you've taken these steps, the part will glide effortlessly up and down the handguard.

ok thanks, ill give the oven a try, but ill have to wait till the wife is home, as i dont know how to work the oven :redface

No worries, thanks for pointing that out.

Another tip (to myself :rolleyes) is let the paint harden PROPERLY, i think the main problem was the paint was "stretching" along the grooves as the pump grip was moved, creating tiny lumps of paint which in turn was sticking the grip :redface

so, have stripped all paint off, re primed with acid etch primer, let that sit for a week then top coated in Simoniz matt black (better quality paint than the Halfords stuff i used)

heres hoping
