"Steampunked" CO 11th Doctor's Sonic

This was a little project I'd started some time back but only finished to my satisfaction when I once again got comfortable with a soldering iron working on the 3D-printed Alternate 8th Doctor's Sonic kit by Doctor Octoroc. I love the steampunk aesthetic, but working with brass and leather and the like is just beyond my capabilities. So I took a CO 11th Doctor's sonic, some black paint, an assortment of colors of Rub N' Buff, and whipped this up:

You may notice that there are two sound/light activation buttons...the second button is from a broken sonic that I basically transplanted to the spot where the lower button on the power core is when extended. I tried my best to give the "ivory" section of the grip the look of woodgrain, with limited success, in my opinion. The "black' section has been painted brown and drybrushed with black to make it look grimy. Anyway, here's the Sonic when extended:

And just this past weekend, I gave it the finishing touch, taking out the green LED and putting in a blue one to make it as different from the established color scheme as possible. I also gave the green emitter lens a couple of coats of clear blue for the following effect:

Anyway, I know it's nothing that really breaks any new ground, but just wanted to share...

Not bad, not bad. I have an idea for an alternate 11th but just haven't had the fundage lately to see it through.

Thanks! I know what you mean about money being tight. Now that I have this finished to my satisfaction and my alt 8th done too, I'm working on trying to make a convincing-looking Sonic (that's not specific to any one Doctor) out of dollar-store items and junk-drawer stuff...and possibly the electronics chip from one of the broken CO 10th sonics I modded for that "memorial" display a while back...but that's for a thread of its own...

That looks great. I always thought the 11th Doctor's Sonic lent itself to the Steampunked look.

I agree , really good use of Rub and Buff , I do rate these metalised paints , they would well on almost any surface , keep up the good work !

Thanks, everyone! I like to imagine that the Doctor has a few different color schemes of sonic to choose from and the one we see in the show is just his preferred version...this one came from the question of what would happen if the Doctor lost one of his Sonics while visiting a particular planet and then when he visited again, say, ten thousand or so years in that planet's future, he came across it...I didn't really want to show oxidation, because who knows what sort of exotic metals are used in Gallifreyan technology? (Although I did have a ball with the weathering on the Alt 8th Sonic from Doc Octoroc...) But I imagined that it would have a fairly decent coating of grime...

I know it's an older thread, but somehow I found it and I absolutely love the painting and the blue emitter. Didn't you think about painting the inner green parts to blue to fit the emitter.

You know what you could do to make it even more blue? Change out the green emitter head and use the blue one from the trans temporal sonic set. That may give it the extra custom touch :)

Thanks! I was a little leery of painting the rest of the power core...it would have made the part thicker and could have interfered with the action (I also modded this to flick open like the screen prop and the last thing I wanted to do was anything that could potentially make it stick...)

The green emitter head is in there pretty solid...I probably couldn't remove it without damaging or destroying it in the process. Besides, I kinda like the way the colors combine...

How did you get the sonic to open? Would you be willing to create a guide on how to do this?

Sadly, I took no pictures of the steps I took to make the prop flick open, and I'm a little reluctant to make a tutorial because, quite honestly, the construction of the CO toy is imprecise to the point that the mod I did doesn't ALWAYS work, and taking apart the bottom half of the Sonic is a tedious task that can potentially end up breaking it. However, if you go onto YouTube and look up the user "votesaxon07", he has a number of tutorial videos on how to mod different sonics, and what I did was basically a variation of his technique..

I just came across those a few days ago! I figured the processes would be somewhat related, but I wasn't entirely sure. Thanks for the tip though. Also, if you ever plan on modding another sonic... :popcorn I'd love to see how you do it. :)

Sorry about the back to back posts, but I might have experienced an epiphany; this isn't Doctor Octoroc's printed sonic, is it? I must have assumed so when I saw the words Doctor Octoroc and sonic in the first post, but I just realized you were talking about a different sonic. :facepalm My bad!
