Starting an Assault Phaser scratch build...

...And I need some good reference pics. I have the airsoft Beretta, and does anyone know if the nozzle was a found part or was custom turned. Any help will be most appreciated.

Thanks

Jim

Not that I can offer much in the way of info, but I'm jazzed to see this happen. I love that Phaser. Who's the manufacturer of the 93R you're using, if I may ask?

I remember some discussion a couple of years ago or so, and somebody was going to look at some discontinued plumbing parts as a possibility for the nozzle. Never heard what, if anything, came of it.

That's all's I got...

The Beretta is an el cheapo airsoft that was broken, and given to me by a fellow prop fan. The nozzle as far as I can tell is similar to some plumbing fittings but I can't seem to fid exactly a perfect match.

From what I recall...

RAC told me that metal parts were all custom machined, not found items.

Its a 2 part barrel. I have pics somewhere.

For now I have these and they will have to do until I take a few minutes to hook up the scanner.

Pics of the fiberglas versions.

I've long known the Beretta base, but have never understood WHY the propmakers took that particular route.. The handgun is never fired to produce moving effects, soo.. why?

They wanted a more military, functional, and MEAN looking phaser prop for Star Trek V. Shatner said, in an old American Cinemetographer article "all the prop phasers from the previous movies looked like squirt-guns, not something I'd expect a commando to use".

I've got the article here somewhere but it's likely buried.

I had no idea this was built on a real gun. Airsoft ordered. Shall we do an active project?

Let's do it.

I've been wanting to scratch one of these too. Are there any accurate tech drawings out there?

Jimbo890,

Good luck with this project.

I've got one of the cheap springer Robocop guns and a bad resin assault phaser. Just last week I was thinking of merging the two for a more accurate phaser with at least a removeable clip and a sliding top.

I don't see my project moving up the list of jobs on the ol' bench but if I make any progress, will be posting here too. It sounds like you may be getting company on this one.

As for your original question, I also remembered reading about the front nozzle being custom. It was probably the article by RAC. I'm off to read it again now.

Once I get my airsoft in I'll start sketching the hood and trying to figure out the easiest way to make it out of sheet aluminum.

Any idea what sort of crap is underneath it? I see bumpy things in the slots but ... no idea what that is.

The piece that shows through the cowl was just a vacuformed cover to keep you from seeing inside.

Is is tjust me, or is the base gun a Taurus and not a Beretta? Reason I ask is if the safety lever was an exsisting part on the modified grip frame, it would be a Taurus since Beretta's have slide mounted safeties...

So are the ridges on the side of the clip inset or are they applied to the outside of the clip? can't tell from the side shots.

Go read the RACprops article listed above. The prop house used to make these had a slew of the Beretta 93R's on hand (mostly because they were using them on other shows). I would wager that the details you see on the sides, levers and so forth, were mostly tacked on ad hoc. I've got several resin copies and have seen a couple of real ones - the main body is larger than your average Beretta.

it's also possible there are discrepancies because the original may not have been a replica. it's happened before.
