Stargate SG1 fans need absolutely no introduction to these critters :lol

Non-'gaties' have at least heard of them or seen a picture around :)

Anyway, I've always wanted to have me one of these, and the only 'ready made' option seems to be a long time out-of-stock kit that was made by Warp Models.

So I decided to build one of my own.

First and foremost, I wanted to choose what kind of replicator I wanted to build, so I went through dozens of screencaps, renders I found on the net, etc.

I selected a few that I liked, and picked out elements from each that struck me as :cool

This is an example of one of the first 'original' replicators, as created by the character Reese in the episode 'Menace'.

A replicator in 'stand-by' mode, cute, cuddly and docile looking, ....

    ... not ! :lol

That was the kind of replicator that I liked, with pointy bits, 'ruffled feathers', and looking pretty ticked off :lol

Other types of replicators I like have 'daddy long-legs'

In a nutshell, THIS is what I consider to be replicator : Short front legs, long back legs, plenty of pointy bits ... and with ruffled feathers :lol

So, having the concept in mind, I had to get blocks. Plenty of them :lol

All I have are 3 original production-used blocks that I bought from Legends. Not exactly pristine, straight or ... come to think of it, pretty much useless to stick together like a jigsaw puzzle :lol

I had been toying with this idea for a long time, when Adam of RS Replicas joined the board.

I got in touch with him, and after a few lightning fast PM's, I explained to him what I wanted, he said he could do it, and the next morning I shipped one of my original replicator blocks to him.

When he received the block, he cast a 'master' of it, and proceeded to fix it up good and proper, making everything symmetrical, straight lines, smooth, etc.

He then cast 200 blocks for me, and I subsequently received these :eek

The creation was a 'make it up as I went along' thing, and I had my laptop handy to flick between images to keep my mind refreshed with what I was after.

I started by simply joining blocks together

    And then some more ...

    LOTS of this was involved

And then I started fitting everything together on a basic one-block high 'body'

So, without further ado, here is my finished Replicator in 'Attack Mode'.

Total number of blocks used : 198 and a half !

Just putting the blocks together took over 18 man-hours.

I love the fact that all the blocks are cast from a production-used block :)

Thank goodness I bought that display shelving :lol

It measures 22" (56cms) from tip to tip, 5.5" (14cms) high and 13" (33cms) deep.

Excellent job! Pretty cool to see a practical replica of a CG prop and congrats on doing something that I wasn't sure could be done. It looks like the CG people who created the Replicators didn't cheat that much, if at all, when they built the Replicators.

Incredible! I have always, always wanted to do something like this, but never found the resources or made the time.

The only suggestion for improvement I can see is that the faces of the blocks on the physical "stand-in" props (the one hovering over the table that Carter is staring at looks real, not CG) appear to have a slight convex curve, which catches the light in interesting ways. But other than that, it looks great, and I want one.

    Great job Alan.
You really captured the spider-like quality.
    It even looks scary.

Re: Stargate SG1 - 1:1 Replicator in 'Attack Mode' - Build & Finished

Cheers mate :). Ah, but there is plenty of space all over to play musical chairs for a looooooooooooong time to come :lol

    Thank you ! :):thumbsup

That's what I thought too ! Except for a small rod at the back of the model for support, just to be on the safe side, all I used was extra-strong super-glue. There are no rivets or weird shapes I had to use to make the model fit together.

They only cheated when they made them move :lol

    Thank you AG :)

Yeah, I looked into that, but there were 2 related problems. Making a two-sided mold would have made the cost shoot up ! The way they are now, it was just a one-sided, pour, & sand the reverse side.

Then there are the slight 'curves' themselves. If I had had 2-sided blocks with curves, it would have been VERY difficult to make the bits stick together where two blocks had to go side-by-side and not tip-to-tip.

Even with the way they are now, I did have some difficulty making the side-by-side parts stick together, because they are not entirely flat. There are imperceptive curves, like where the Z outlines are, and it was a major pain to get them that side to stick to anywhere :lol

Then I have achieved my goal :cool:thumbsup

    Thanks !! :)

Amazing work man, it looks like its going to jump through the monitor!

I've looked at the block I have here and thought it would be great to make a full one from it..but laziness kicked in :p Great to see someone put the work in and doing it :)

    Thank you kind sirs :)

What I didn't mention is that those 18 hrs were between 9 am on Thursday, and noon on Friday.

They felt like Pringles. Once I popped, I couldn't stop till it was finished :lol

Oh yes, that's right, I know that collection quite well. Hmm....that sounds creepier than it did in my head. Anyway, yeah you have a wonderful collection! I looovee all your Mummy, ST and Indy stuff, not to mention pretty much everything else. It's pretty obvious you've been quite supportive of the members on here haha.

Very nice work. As an owner of one of the hero blocks, I can agree, doing a two sided block would not work with what you did. Great job!
