Stargate SG-1 Ribbon Device - Start to Finish - Pic Intensive

After a year in production, I have finally finished my goal of building a close-to-screen-accurate replica of the Goa'uld ribbon device from Stargate SG-1. It is all resin construction, except for the springs, and lights up with an L.E.D.. Enjoy the following photos showing the Ribbon Device from sculpt to finish.

Next will be silver and copper versions.

^ Here are the finger caps

^ Scribing the Jaffa lines on a ring

^ Detail work on the main arm band. This widget is at the top of the arm band.

^ Sculpting the upper crystal and it's strap. I re-sculpted the crystal later on.

^ Preparing to make a mold of the arm band. Here it is in a foamcore box

^ Smooth-On Mold Max. Tough, and not degassing it didn't cause problems.

^ Removing the mold from the arm band

^ Parts of the sculpt were damaged

^ First test cast. Yeah, I made a mess that time.

sculpt13.jpg

^ Heat makes forming the band easy. This is the first (and messy) pull.

^ Oh, and here is the center crystal sculpt. Also Chavant. Holes are for the springs.

Fast forward to the finished product ...

^ Lit up with a red L.E.D. inserted into the crystal. Powered by a 3V button cell, and controlled with a push button switch.

^ At least one of the screen used props was lined with black felt inside. I think that will look nice on the next one I make.

^ That top crystal, and the one that lights, were cast with tinted resin in a pressure chamber to remove air bubbles.

^ Here it is unlit. The crystal turned out very nice -- I applaud Smooth-Cast for making great resins.

^ Here it is in a darker room. The camera didn't pick it up 100% accurately, but close.

^ This is it on a woman's (small) hand.

^ It's a little big for her. But the springs can be cut down to any length needed. Plus all of the resin pieces can be heated and shaped to better fit any size hand.

The end.

I will be posting in the Junkyard.

Incredible work! I'm glad you finally finished it, been looking at your site on all your progress, can't wait to see what the metal one looks like!

Thanks!

The metal version is from another member who is in the UK (he's on here as Pete SSS). His is quite a nice piece, and hand made from aluminum I believe.

I'm not a metalsmith myself by any stretch. I will probably do some experimenting with cold casting these (resin + metal powder), but otherwise they are going to stay in the realm of plastics.

:thumbsup

Looks great.

How did you rig the switch? Momentary contact type behind the palm so it made contact from the spring force when the fingers were fully extended?

It's just a push button hidden in the palm. I would like to experiment with a tilt switch or mercury switch if I can find a good supplier of them.

What would be cool for the switch if the wires would stay hidden is get a small magnetic reed switch, put that say in the pinky finger, then put a rare earth magnet in the ring finger and run the wires down the middle of the springs. Open the hand up and spread the fingers apart... it kicks on. Not sure how much the springs stretch though and might reveal the wires.

cheech, that's a really intriguing idea, and seems very workable. The springs don't extend much when moved, or at least not to the point where a wire painted the same color would be noticed.

I'm going to order some small reed switches and give it a try. Thanks for the cool idea mate!

:thumbsup Top quality work Merc! Amazing detail and very sharp lines. When funds are available ill be hounding you for one
