Stargate movie Ra mask now with glowing eyes

RPF member Vandark lent me his production foam latex face appliance to mold and cast some resin pieces. This project has taken far longer that it should have which I apologize for. The mask was cast with Bronze powder with different waxes applied. In the next few days I will try making a mask with glowing eyes:cool I acquired an original mold of one of the panels from Ra's pyramid spaceship and thought a casting of this would make a great display base. When the mold arrived I found it was made from a few layers of latex and somebody had stuck it to a sheet of plastic

It was a tricky job to get the mold unstuck from the plastic and took about an hour. I managed to make one cast from it but the heat from the curing resin destroyed the latex:( I made a new mold from this cast and made a thin cast and cut it square. I cut a square with angled sides out of 18mm MDF then glued the casting on to this and filled and sanded the join. The bases are cast with a square of MDF embedded inside the cast to make it cheaper.

And the final result:D

Re: Ra mask on spaceship panel base

I bet the glowing eye's are going to be so cool..nice work man..

Re: Ra mask on spaceship panel base

That is a absolutely beautiful. I've seen a lot of pieces finished only to be displayed on just really poor choice bases, to the point it looks tacky. This the the polar opposite, worthy of any great collector's mantle. Very jealous.

Re: Ra mask on spaceship panel base

These will be for sale in the junkyard in the next few weeks and I'll make it so they can be displayed wall mounted as well.

Re: Ra mask on spaceship panel base

It has taken me so long to get this project finished but I'm very happy with how it turned out. I just need to work out the hanging bracket now.

Re: Stargate movie Ra mask on spaceship panel base

I did manage to creep out to my workshop today to work on the glowing eye version. I didn't have time to add all the patina to the mask yet, I wanted to make sure my idea worked first. I think it came out pretty well but I only had car paint Aerosols to use so I think by using my airbrush next time I can make the eyes even brighter:cool

wooooooow!

this looks amazing!

so, have you given up on the cold casting idea now?

I can still do it for the non light up version but the Bronze powder makes the resin too dense to let the resin shine through, I think. I will try another tomorrow and let you know. Do you like the Bronze version or would you like it Gold and what about the colour of the base?

the Base looks fine... and the painted mask looks looks great, but perhaps bronze paint?

if you look at the movie mask, the main colour seems to be bronze, with the patina round the patterned parts and the eyes actually look amber!

what u think?

All I had was car Bronze paint that is too bright. I wanted to make the mask like a Bronze casting and not a replica but I could try it.

Fantastic work!:thumbsup andy could you start an Interest thread? would like to see If It's out of my wallets league..

Andy, did you try dusting the mold with the bronze powder? wouldn't be as dense as putting the powder in the resin j& should be able to lightly buff the surface for the bronze effect and get the glow through.

Rustoleum has a nice bronze with fine metallic, as long as your patina paints will play nice with the Rustoleum as a base. You just can't clear coat the bronzerustoleum or you lose the look
