Stargate G.D.O.

Hey gang, I got a cheep G.D.O. off ebay. It was a solid resin casting, and I'm tricking it out, with electronics, more accurate buttons, etc.etc. (at least that is the plan, but things rarely go according to my plans. )

Any screen caps, info, etc. would be more then welcome.

My question at the moment is, what should I make the buttons out of, and how should I put the munters on them. (try to come up with stuff that a person could find at actual stores like Wal*Mart, Michele's, Hobby lobby, etc. etc.)

My to ideas for the buttons so far are.

1. Make a mold out of something like sculpty, or plaster of Paris. Then us Hot glue to make the buttons. This has worked great in the past for other pojects, but I can't garment that hot glue would come out clear enough to look screen accurate, and I don't know how I would get the numbers on the buttons.

2. Make the same kind of mold, as I would if I was going with option one, but rather then using hot glue, use, 100% silicon Caulk. It still might not be clear enough though, and it might be even harder to put the numbers on that stuff.

Or, as a possible option 3, I was thinking it would be nice if I could find something (like a remote, or old cell phone) with clear buttons, with the numbers already on them. However, I have no leads on that, and I don't want this project to get put on the project pile wall I look for something like that. (I have a way, of getting a really good start on a project, but every time a project winds up on the "project pile" it goes from a "weekend project" something I'll do one of these days, but never seem to get around to doing.) I want to get this done quick. :)

Oh, and i know there are threads out there about these, but they seem to be "for sale" thread, really old threads, or threads looking for other specific info on these. Wall I have started it off with a specific question (about the buttons) I actualy want this to be a thread where folks can feel free to post any info abou these. (i.e. caps, pics of their replicas, color suggestions, opinions on what size they should be, etc. etc. etc. anyting G.D.O. replica or screen used.)

Could try this.
Castin'Craft Clear Polyester Casting Resin - BLICK art materials
This is just the stuff, I think last time I was at Michaels or Hobby Lobby they had it. They have transparent dyes for the stuff as well.

You would be better off using boogers... :lol Honestly the Castin'Crap stuff is the worst of the worst in clear resin...

Several years ago I did testing on multiple clear resins, pretty much every one I could source at the time... The end results were dismal except for two brands...

The best Smooth-On clear, second best Alumilite clear, the rest gave FAR inferior results... I still have a casting I did with the CC resin on the shelf, it's been several years now and the only reason it's not sticky is because it's dusty, if you handle it at all it regains its sticky surface, a total waste... The 'pour' over organic or acrylic clears that you see used in flower vases for fake water work sorta OK, but they yellow horribly in a short time, and are actually quite brittle...

But now that it's been a few years I see more and more resin distributors carrying 'house' brand clear resin, I suspect most of it's the same re-branded whatever so your results might vary...

For the buttons, I would honestly look at vintage cell phones and vintage land line phones, many of them had oval buttons and several of them lack the letters on the buttons leaving you with just the numbers just like you want... I'm willing to be with a few hours of Ebay time you could find something damn close...

If you are having an issue not being able to find some without letters, look for non English country models...

exoray, both the Smooth-On clear and the Alumilite clear say for industrial use, not for home use -- so do you have any recommendation for a clear casting resin that can used by the amateur home piddler with at least a 'decent' result?

I'm wanting to make a cast the Mombi head case key from Return to Oz....

What would you recommend for doing that....?

Nope, if you want decent results go with what I suggested...

Just don't cast it in your living room, and wear the appropriate safety gear that you should be wearing anyway... Do it outside or in a well ventilated shop area...

Okay, thanks. Guess I'll try the Alumilite as it was available in a smaller quantity than the Smooth-on, though I saw some awesome stuff made from the Smooth-on clear......

Sorry, Jason, I shoulda started my own thread and not hijacked yours......

Call Smooth-On I hear if you actually call them on the phone they will offer up smaller quantities of the clear, never tried it myself but I have heard it from multiple people...

Not at all, It's a cool looking prop, form a cool movie. (I'm glad I'm not the only one that has seen it. :) )

A few years ago, some friends of mine ordered "Samples" from Smooth on. I didn't do it myself, but I think they were pretty cheep, and though I didn't see what they sent myself, I t sounded like a nice little kit, and may be just about what your looking for.

Also, some hobby shops (the little mom and pop places, not big places like Hobby lobby, or Machete's. ) will carry Smooth on, and/or alumalite. And even if they don't stock it, they will sometimes get samples, from the companies (to entice them to carry it.) and if you ask, they may be willing to sell it.

I had a friend that used to work at one of those places, and though they didn't carry that stuff, regularly, they would get samples all the time, to try the stuff out. (I don't no if they ordered it, or if the companies just sent them some for free) My friend took home a few "free samples" from smooth on, that the store had received, and that they had no idea who would buy. (again, I don't know if it was free for the store, or not, but it went home with my friend that worked there, for free. :lol)

Actually Hobby Lobby does carry a small selection of Alumilite resin, silicone and pigments, not clear resin though...

Thanks Jason for not being mad that I derailed the thread
Great little movie, and I believe more have seen it than will admit it!!

Well, I got about 20 other things on my plate, but the key IS one on them!!

I'll try "all of the above" to attempt to obtain a small quantity of the smooth-on.....

Yeah, was looking at Hobby Lobby today and they had a couple of Alumilite kits, but right exoray, no clear Alumilite.

And Michael's is becoming a joke for any serious crafting, the one nearest me isn't much more than a glorified scrapbooking store and wedding and knitting empuroim.

Not many mom and pop places left around these parts. There's one little hobby shop I remember seeing from the freeway on the way to Galveston, but I think they only have or mostly have models.

Thank goodness there's always the Internet!!!

Thanks for all the help guys.

If you have a HobbyTown USA near you they generally carry Alumilite and I believe they might even have clear...

That's the line of stores my friend worked at. :lol I am a card caring customer of theirs. :)

I got into them years ago, when they let some friends and I play star wars minis, at their store, every Thurseday night. (yeah, yeah, I'm a nerd. :lol)

As my luck usually runs, there's not a Hobby Town in the Houston area. Nearest one to me appears to be in Austin and I m i g h t get up there one of these days. I see there's one just north of Orlando and we're going there next month so maybe I can make a stop on the way out.......

I have used the Smooth-On crystal clear, with their dyes, and have had great results in the past.

None of that stickiness exo mentioned about the Michael's stuff.

I actually found a pink gem I made for my daughter a few years ago, and it looks as good as it did the day I made it.

Yes some pics of one light up would be nice.

Also, Does anyone else own one of SD studios Atlantis GDO kits? If so, what did you do to make the buttons for your kit? (mine didn't come with any, and I assume, that noone else got any either, so I'm hoping someone out there can give me some ideas, or point me in the right direction.)

My recommendation for the buttons would be to find a calculator with matching size and color buttons and cannibalize it for its keys.

You can find reference pics here: GDO References pictures by lostncybr - Photobucket

I also recommend signing up for SciFiHero.net, it's not necessarily a Stargate centric site but it started life as SG-Command.net and still remains (in my opinion) one of the best Stargate props & costuming sites out there. I'm sure the members there can help you a lot in making your GDO as accurate as possible since I'm sure that at least some of the members have attempted the same in the past.
