Starcraft 2 ripped off Predator a little bit.

I think I recall in the first SC the pilot of the human drop ship just quotes the pilot from aliens "we're in for some chop" "by the by (something or other) i don't remember exactly but it's like quoting lines from the movie aliens which is pretty funny. But I have to agree it is very very very much like warhammer 40k w/eldar, space marines, and tyranid. The SC space marines even look almost exactly like the warhammer marines. Oh well, still a cool game none the less.

That would be implying the protoss were inspired by predators and the zerg by starship troopers (which is humorous to me). Take a legit look at a predator and at a protoss... I see where people are coming from but hot damn... that is a very far connection.

Look at the independence day aliens. They have protoss-like features. Did blizzard rip them off to?

In my opinion, when you have things from the same genre, you are always going to be able to make some kind of connection to it...

Did the Halo elites rip off the predator? They were alien... they could cloak.. they had mandibles... they were tall as hell. No doubt an insipration but not a rip off lol

You can pick out similarities but I don't think they ripped off the predator with the design of the protoss race. They still don't even look alike to me aside the dread-style hair... and if you play that card... where do you think the predator got his design for dreads?


I whipped up a photo for people who never played Starcraft... even after making this, its even crazier to think that Blizzard straight up "ripped off" the predator franchise... The protoss unit in this pic is a zealot... the closest thing that even resembles the predator... Maybe a dark templar perhaps... like Zeratual... but check it out

I didn't state that it was a "rip off", I merely asked a question to your comment about the difference between "inspiration" and ripped off". I even stated: "but, if it was inspired....". I was pointing to the "if" factor.

I agree with you that in the same genre you can have similarities and inspirations can create new characters. I believe certain things within the realm of "futuristic space" are common among different franchises as a "norm" of how things operate. Look at "cloaking" in Star Trek. Star Trek pre-dates me, but I believe they used cloaking in the Original episodes which aired in the 1960's-70's. The Predator franchise used it as well. This could be a universal, common technology, just like "laser weapons". Another is "hyper-space", which is used in both Star Wars and Star Trek and probably used on the Predator vessels too.

Could there be and are there going to be "similarities" between certain characteristics of two different franchises, yes. But, in my opinion, some things are clear trademarks within a franchise. Look at the lightsaber from Star Wars. I don't remember seeing another franchise use this weapon, but when someone see's one I believe the first thing comes to mind is "it's a weapon in Star Wars...".

I know what you are saying about the lightsaber... that is iconic yes... I just dont see how that is applied to the protoss... who looks notihng like the predator...

Also... since this topic is here... we should get a group of us who play sc2 to play! It would be fun!

Blizzard is well known for ripping off other people's stuff then polishing it so much that it looks like they came up with it on their own.

Actually a lot of Blizzard employees are nerds like us and like to do homages. All through out World of Warcraft and Starcraft 1 there are nothing but references to pop culture and design.

The drop ship and marines in Starcraft 1 straight up copy lines out of the Aliens movie with "in the butt, five by five", and "how do i get out of this chicken **** out fit". It's what Blizzard does that is fun. I'm sure you can say that the Dark Templar (protoss unit) is a rip off because it cloaks and has dreds! If you want to see rip off you should check out Ever Quest 2. They have a class that cloaks and sees in heat vision to hunt.

I'm pretty sure Blizzard have just been 'inspired' by great concepts. Warhammer 40k, Tolkien mythology and great Sci-fi movies of the 80's.

Err sorta. the original warcraft game was supposed to be a Warhammer fantasy RTS but games worskhop backed out at the last minute. Then blizzard was all well WTF we got a game designed so they made it "their own" which means just changed the mythos. Thats why there is such a similarity to them and warhammer games. Starcraft is no different. I mean Zerg = Tyranids, Space marines - space marines, Protoss = Tau.
