Star Wars VHS original releases?

Going through some old stuff I found a VHS box set of Star Wars. Are these original releases? If so what are they worth?

They're pre-Special Edition but not original theatrical release.

Even if they were VHS doesn't go for much at all as a format in general.

Unfortunately I'd have to agree.

I own the THX (pre-SE) box set. Decided to try and sell it a while ago and wanted to gauge a price... They go for peanuts on ebay. :(

Moffeaton's reply is not only witty on multiple levels, but surprisingly accurate.

I ended up putting all of my old SW VHS's in the Yard Sale last year for $5 a set. Made more than I would have on ebay.

"Original release" is a weird concept with the Star Wars VHS tapes. They passed hands through a few different distributors over the years. My video store when I was a kid had the CBS-Fox tapes. (Yes, at one point, CBS and Fox were working together. Go figure.)

As has been said, ain't worth much. Partially because you have to find someone who still has a working VCR...

All of our TV's still have working VCR's hooked up to them and I still have the original CBS-Fox, THX Box Set and Special Edition sets. It's fun still being able to watch the original VHS versions compared to the SE versions. I like some of the things done for the SE, but prefer the originals.

I still own that Star Wars VHS box set. And my VHS still works. Although, I wish it was an S-VHS. Back in the day it was too expensive. Besides, some stuff hasn't been released on DVD yet like old cartoons.

the only version of Star Wars on VHS that is worth anything as a collector's item is the 1st "RENTAL ONLY" pan & scan version that came out in 1982.

That's the one I have. Got it from a video rental store years ago. Still watch it from time to time. Nice memories. :)

I have a working Sony S-VHS and its fantastic compared to a normal VHS. And yes I think I paid $600-$700 for it back in the day when a normal VHS player was $100.

Yeah, I have somewhere, stored in a box.

Years ago I bought a multiformat VCR for $400, and this fact still amazes me sometimes. I managed to resell it in good condition right before VHS officially died, though, and I think I actually got $360 for it.

These days I still have VCRs hooked up though. As somebody else said, some stuff has never been released digitally and that sucks and it's why I still have a truckload of VHS tapes.

That version you have pictured there is the 1990 or 1992 released version box set. Not worth much monetarily, but sure worth a lot to many Star Wars purists.

I had the original release versions of the trilogy years ago but wound up giving them to some kids back in the late 80s as I had moved on to what was hot at the time, laserdisc. Just for the collectibility of them I wish I'd kept them...

I still have the orginal Betamax release my dad bought way back when, I think it was '82. Best part is, I still have the Sony Betamax player he bought to play it one.

I must have watched it a few hundred times over the years... When I set it up about 2004, it still looked good, with only minimal issues in the first five minutes or so of the tape, and then it cleaned right up. It still astonishes me that almost 30 years later, both worked at all. I think I went through about 8 VHS players in ten years, yet that Beta still kept going.

LOL so ur saying that my working VCR is worth more than the movies LOL. Just thought I'd ask! Thought I found some gold. :)

My Sony VHS was the top of the line except for the S-VHS back in 1998 I think. It was around $250 or $350. I can't remember. The S-VHS was like an extra $100 or maybe even $200. These were Sony Store prices so I probably should have shopped else where but places like Best Buy didn't sell high end stuff back then. And I started to not like Best Buy around that point. I'll probably find an old S-VHS one day along with a Sony XBR CRT TV. That was another thing that was too expensive and heavy! I couldn't move 27" TVs by myself back then and I was in fairly good shape.

Back to Star Wars, I still have my Super 8 version of the original Star Wars!
