Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG moving to FREE

So, does that mean it's not doing that well? I know my girlfriend beta tested it and wasn't thrilled.

It's not going well at all. I was on Ven Zallow server with over 2k people 3k on weekends when Patch 3.0 hit it went to 3k peak on weekdays. Right after, they announced that ranked pvp would not be in the next patch basically the entire player base left. 1 month after the patch went live I logged in on a Saturday at 5pm and I was the only person on the entire server.

The problem with the game is that it plays like a single player game with a storyline. Once you get to the end of the story-line there is nothing to do but pvp and a few small story based instances. There is no roleplay elements and they do not encourage any sort of community, there is no free roaming space travel or battles -spaceship combat is on rails, and impossible to beat lvl 60 missions- not only that there item system is not unique at all, everyone looks the same. In a genre like Star Wars that isn't a good thing.

I saw this coming WAY before SWTOR even came out. First they cut servers and now Free-to-play; which means not enough subscribers to make money.

I hate micro transaction systems.

Good job, they ended Star Wars Galaxies for this...at least I could do a bunch of stuff in Galaxies...

Which also means the game will have a item mall so I'm sure it will abopt a pay-to-keep-up system with no other way to advance.

Kinda like DCU, they let you buy stuff for your characters, and force you to buy new expansions.

Its doing fine there are just alot of WoW fanbois out there waiting fo rtheir furry fix in the fall, dont mind them...

Its star wars, its fun, I think that is what really matters.

I don't even play wow. How can you call a game that isn't even a year old going free to play "doing fine'?

well it worked for dcuo, they got so many people to play that they needed extra servers because it was unplayable due to too many people

I used words.

Logic too, the F2P model was in their business plan and also was planned from the beginning, they werent "moving" to the model, it was in their back pocket.

Also they only needed 1 mil subs for a year to sustain profits and they already had that easily in the first three months.

They limit your money to 1500 or something unless you pay. They say paying takes you up to 2500 or something. I don't get it because ads pop up in the chat window all the time saying they'll sell you 5 million game money for 5 bucks. Not sure what you'd do with it if the system maxes out at 2500 or so.

They limit the spending to 1500, you can have as much money as you want, but you can only spend 1500 at a time.

SWGemu.com

Yeah, but aren't they still waaaaay behind, last I recall hearing they barely had active mobs to fight.

Its star wars, its fun, I think that is what really matters.

But, to people who prefer stuff that is Original Trilogy, it matters in a lot of senses. Galaxies had plenty to do, virtually no limits on travel, space flight, and whatnot.

You are the one who wanted to discuss business economics of a video game franchise on a prop forum.

Where is the logic in that?

Not sure where I discussed economics. These games turn south when going free to play, and the restrictions on the free to play are harsh. Enjoy the game.

There's a level cap before the $$$ comes into play if you want to go further. The only time you'll see EA and "free" in the same sentence is here.

Check out the Guild Wars model by ArenaNet. You only have to buy the game itself. No monthly subscription, no level restrictions, access to all areas, etc. It's been going on 7 years strong. There are microtransactions but they have absolutely no affect on the game itself other than for cosmetic purposes, extra character slots and extra in game storage. Guild Wars 2 which is coming out in less than a month will follow the same model.

Guild Wars did just fine with that thought process from the beginning. I used to play GW all the time, because 1, it was free, and 2 the game was worth a damn. I will probably be jumping on GW2.

I think I am gonna uninstall DCU though, the game is ok for being free, but waaaaay too repeatative.

I see gaggles of misinformation like this...a lot. The server merge was needed. I won't say the "entire player base" left, but I will say the population took a hit. A big hit. That said, everyone KNEW F2P was coming. It's the new business model for MMOs.

A lot of what you have posted are strictly "opinions". Not a shred of it is true. Granted, you may have been one of a very small group of people on your instance at your particular time, but that does not mean you were the sole player on the ENTIRE server. Nope, not buying what you are selling here. Soooorry.

I have found MORE RP on my new server, good RP at that, than 4 years of WoW. Space missions are"difficult", not impossible. I've beaten every space mission there is. All it takes is knowing how to use ALL of the tools on your ship, and it had best be maxed out before you try those missions. Hard, but VERY doable.

PvP on this game is actually FUN. If you use your class abilities well, you can have a FAIR fight. I know, shocking. They almost give you gear to get you started in PvP now. That gear will also get you through some hard flashpoints until you get better gear. The item system is VERY unique now. You can take modifications from one piece of gear and add them to another to make YOUR look. Hell, I took my mods for my Juggernaut and added them to some Tusken gear for PvE and Imperial Trooper gear for PvP. I haven't seen a game like that since SWG...and TOR does it better.

Sorry man, a lot of what you have posted is outdated bull. If you don't like the game, fine, don't play it. I am enjoying it. I took a break, came back and have grown quite fond of it.

I'll be the first to tell you that there are flaws. Take for instance being able to buy a chair with Hutt Cartel coins...yet you can't sit in any chair in the game that is not on your ship. Chat bubbles are STILL not in the game. It is a system resource HOG as well. If you get past those things, you will find enjoyment. I have.

Oh, time for some troof. There is NO level cap on F2P. You are limited in the things you will be able to do for "FREE", but shouldn't that be the case? Here is the complete list.

Anyone who thought TOR would be a WoW killer was deluded. I never saw it happening as WoW has years of bug bashing under its belt. That said, it is a fun game. Hell, the Penny Arcade crew predicted this F2P right at launch.
