Wasn't Peter Cushing in SW only shot from the waist up because the boots hurt and he wouldn't wear them? I think so. Also Spielberg shot around Ford when he got hurt on ToD and Coppola did it with Marty Sheen when he had a heart attack on Apocalypse Now.

I wonder what is going on with having other people do the 8 & 9. Was it motivated by the studio or by J.J.? I have a hard time believing J.J. would decline after everything that has been said about his Star Wars fandom.

JJ almost dropped out of this one! He doesn't want to spend this much time in the UK. Disney probably wanted his experience and leadership up front on the first one to set the template, and then pass it off to capable-yet-cheaper hands. I imagine JJ will continue to produce, as he is with Star Trek and Mission: Impossible while others direct.

This is pretty much in keeping with the original trilogy where various people directed the subsequent episodes. This is, maybe, a good omen!
