Hey guys

Been seeing a few Star Wars themed rooms around this site lately, and very nice they artoo! So I thought I might just have a go at one myself.
At the moment, I have a 'finished' props room to display and store all my mannequins/models etc and I reckon it's time to make it a PROPer home for them.

This is how it looks now

Am thinking mainly Death Star interior with maybe some Star Destroyer and possibly Falcon features. It's gonna be quick and dirty so no light boxes or electrical stuff but definitely some ducting/sockets/comm ports and the like

OK a bit more progress...finished the light spot wall pattern and the grey backdrop

And started putting some of the greeblie details on the wall

Awesome setup! Been thinking about doing this for my movie room, as well...how did you make the Death Star wall panels?

This is really cool, I'd love to build a Star Wars themed basement, but unfortunately I have no basement... maybe I could convert one of my garages into one.

Well the light spot walls are just grey 'Downpipe' paint with brilliant white emulsion. I started off cutting out a stencil from 1mm clear plastic sheet but it didn't transfer so well because the white just bleeds out everywhere, so I ended up using good old masking tape in rectangular strips and then adding the curves by painting the grey around a disc

Looks good, I have some dimensions for panels in my Death Star Hangar room if they'd be of use.

Thanks dude...your MDF panels are sick but I just went for the paint effect

I found some old seventies' bulkhead lights which I'm gonna put up and mod. When u really get into this stuff u realise everything has to go, and be replaced. No more door handles, light switches, plug sockets, lamp shades, skirting boards, cupboards etc. And I can't just rip up the carpet...I'm gonna use coin stud rubber matting to cover it. Stay tuned...

Speaking of "everything has to go" I have been pondering a "non-destructive" room format for a long time...trying to see if there's anyway to create what would basically be a movie set that can be left up for long periods of time, or taken down when/if necessary. Thought gator board or foamcore or even coroplast might be good options for a base wall panel, and then you could just stick greeblies or lights or conduit or styrofoam or whatever directly onto that. Plus, you could build it flat, versus hanging stuff directly onto the wall. Then, when it's time to replace or remove, you can just take the whole thing down and have your original wall underneath.

Sounds like a neat idea...my build is gonna take a lot of un-building to return the room to it's former state, but I don't imagine I'll be jacking in the whole Star Wars obsesion thing anytime soon. :p One problem though; What do you do with all the panels full of greeblies when u want to clear the room...You'd need a spare room just to store them in?

Haha, yes...at some point. But ideally, that point would be when; A. You have a kid and need the room, B. You have another kid and need the room, C. You get ready to sell the house.
In either case, the point is that you would be able to remove and reconstruct at another location "fairly easily." I wasn't implying this would be a weekly take-down/put-back process...just something that could make it easier to construct, because you could do it flat on the floor and hang it up, panel by panel via command strips or something similar, and then remove permanently when the time comes. I'm mainly thinking of my own media room that has lots of built in cabinets that would require some sort of non-destructive design element, if I wanted to overhaul the look...ah, if only all my "problems" were this difficult, lol!! :lol

This is the BIG thing with my build as well. I am building everything at home and then transporting it to my studio office. Everything has to be built to have the option of moving to another area if needed. This in itself is a whole other animal not to mention it has to look the part, so when I build anything for the room it has to be able to be taken down easily. I am planning on mounting most of the wall pieces directly to studs in the wall and then covering them with greeblies!! I admit that having a location photo pointing/circling where the screws are may be needed;)

OK more progress...this project seems to be evolving into a much bigger undertaking than first imagined...oh well

Got the window framed and the lighting done. Will have a blackout blind to hide the Endor view!
