Star Wars Rebels Jedi Holocron

I'm in the process of designing a movable Jedi Holocron based on the Rebels series:

The idea is to make it a single printable piece, that has a pseudo gear system inside and that does not dissasemble.

Really cool idea!

How about making the windows square, each with a ledge so that you could install clear plexiglass. Then the gold circles could be applied onto the plexiglass.
You can also see etched lines on the glass windows.

Yes that would be easy to do.. Ill add it.. im currently moddifiying the internals so it looks better... like so:

Thanks, Im just trying to optimize the design so it prints in one shot, no assembly required.

Don't know much about 3D print in but how would a one shot print work with something so intricate?!

Well it's possible to print in a single piece however the removal of the support material will be very dificult. A guy from shapeways recommended me I make it as an assembly. The caveat of a one pass print is that the clearences need to be large and that will make a sloppy mechanical part.

So I split the design in to assembly pieces and Printed a few sections and its working... I also scaled it 75% to save material for now... I will complete the smaller cube today and print the larger one over the weekend.

I might still try printing one at shapeways once i'm done with the hombrew

If anyone here wants to download the files and print at home feel free, each piece has the option to download the model or buy. I will not make the fully assembled model available for buying because I am not sure how it will print. but you can try at home if you want by downloading it.

The core piece you orient the large hole on the base plate and you should not need supports. The spherical inner structure can support the layers sequencially.

The other pieces will need supports.

You need 4 of each gear because the teeth are offset, the way you put it together is that ger1 is adjacent to gear 2 in all cases... you cant put gear 1 adjacent to gear 1.

you fit each gear sequentially and have to key inn the corners correctly to orient them before gluing them.

By the way, my daughter wants one and she asked me to make it all corners a different color... pics to come.

forgot to mention, its a bit tricky to assemble but its not impossible.

How am I just finding this now? Just wanted to say that you have done an awesome job on this and thank you for sharing.

I'm currently in the process of making my own but mine is the Stolen holocron from Clone Wars. I haven't worked out how to hold my triangles in multiple positions but I have ideas, I intend for the holocron to be able to recreate this scene.

I'm planning to fill the spaces with plexiglass sheet

One thing I did notice about your holocron is it seems a bit on the small size at 2.5" square.
however, I don't really know the proper size and have made mine 3" square.

I'm currently waiting on the 3D printed pieces to arrive so I can start finishing it and work out the locking mechanism. A friend suggested RE magnets so I found the overlapped regions on the corners where I could put them.



The only problem I have now is that the magnets would have to be 1-2mm diameter to fit without destroying a piece of the assembly.
