Although it is not my favourite concept design, I like it as the bridging design that most of us have wanted to see in EP3.

Would this be considered a "concept" or just an animated version?

I'd say this is a "two-for-one" scenario. It's the RM design but in universe I feel it's just an animated version of what is in the movies. It wouldn't make any sense to have movie version at the end of Ep3 and then later put this version on. That's my canon anyway:)

"most of us have wanted to see in EP3"

I personally would not have wanted to see this in ep3 - a less symmetrical and closer to IV design.

The same with the Rebels Stormtrooper helmet I think this goes into the animated category. I guess for example that concept goes to McQuarrie version

This is very close to the concept helmet, but look at the dome a little closer. The way the brow comes down in the front is squared off and not pointed.
Also, I gotta say, I actually REALLY liked the ROTS helmet. The way it was all symmetrical and completely black... it was really cool.

For me the ROTS Vader helmet looked like it had no soul, like the OT versions had.

Absolutely. And why they opted for flat lenses ...

The design of course had to be "polished" to make it more consistent with the OT, and I do not like that it is actually closer to the novels cover design that was done by EFX, but it´s still nice to see that they are trying to show time passing by giving us "older" designs.

Regarding EP3, since his outfit is so damn important for the character, they could have taken more time for the creation process. I would have loved to see Anakin actually choose what he wanted to wear, i.e. choosing the Dark side on his own, and not be clad into armor by the Emperor, but even more manipulated. This could have even gone so far to actually show concept Vader helmets and have Anakin choose the mask and helmet we all know. But hey, let´s hope that we get some cool new stuff in the Sequels (yeah!!!).

The problem in PT is we got too much Naboo, podracing, etc. instead of how Vader turns to the dark side IMO

I like to think of it as his more combat armor, seeing that he did actually have to go out and take out the last of the Jedi on his own (from what I know). So i feel like it was just a suit used for the purposes of combat and just to keep him alive, until of course he got older and decided his suit needed to be changed to something more regal and royal looking, which is the OT suit. Of course, that's by no means fact, just kind of what I like to think of.

What is seen in the show is always going to be visually debatable (unless confirmed by people such as Dave Filoni) as to what visual details are actual changes in appearance of items that we know and what are simply animation style elements. For example: Yoda's head in TCW series was purposely made extra large. However at no point are we suppose to believe that between movies, Yoda had an allergic reaction that caused cranial swelling. However, we also know from previous interviews that things like the McQ's art work are also being utilized in things like the TIE Fighters to represent earlier versions.

I too think it would have been a nice touch to utilize McQ's Vader in ROTS.

Totally agree. I also didn't like how the suit just seemingly came out of nowhere. To me, the transition would've made way more sense if Anakin had already been wearing a suit and armor similar to the Vader suit we all know or perhaps one based on one of the McQ concepts. Just add the helmet and electronics along with some tweaks after his little accident and call it a day! As with so many things with the PT, the famous suit and armor seemed like an afterthought.

Well I'll say one thing that is cool is that over all some of RM's concepts are seeing the light of day. Like his idea for Chewie is now being used as Zeb, something I never thought I'd get to see on the screen...animated or not.

i was hoping to see anikan wearing the helmet (not the mask just the helmet) while he stormed the temple...

My collection (so far) of Vader's Evolution.
L to R: Darth Stone McQuarrie Concept, JRX McQuarrie Concept, EFX McQuarrie Concept, Don Post ESB cast, unknown ROTJ Reveal Custom.

I'm still trying to acquire the concept made by someone named "Koo Koo" (seen on this page: http://www.starwarshelmets.com/mcquarrie-concept-darth-vader-helmets.htm )

I'd love it if someone made this animated version too!
