Star Wars: Rebels Chopper WIP

Looks great so far! Just curious, what diameter body are you making?

By my estimates he's about 19.5 to 20in.

This is looking great! I have been thinking about making a static R2 for 501st outings but this might be a simpler start into the astromech world. Keep the updates coming!

I wanted to get most of it done before doing the painting otherwise I will rush it and make a mistake.
The foam is the large floor sheets made by Rolson from Halfords.
The body is 20.5 wide, I have tried to scale it right but this is a suck it and see project as its the first droid I have built. That and the minimal amount of ref material when I started the project. I am rebel legion and I wanted it for charity events and con's when I troop.

For a first droid this is absolutely amazing, and i'm going to halfords right now.
do you use a hot glue gun to stick the foam and if so, how do you do long joins before it cools. bit by bit?

Yeah I use hot glue and the longer joints are a bitch, its not so bad when you can bend and glue bit by bit, but the sections when this isn't possible is hard. I am aware that some people use barge cement/glue. Its hard to get hold of over here but it is good stuff and your joints can be better rather than the hot glue which can be messy to work with.

The foam is so cheap at Halfords 6x large sheets for £10, great for any project.

Hi Everybody,
I haven't had a great deal of time to crack on with my many projects that I have going at the moment. What small amount of time I have had has been shared out and here is some update pics of chopper. I hope you like.

That is fantastic,
i cant believe how good this is looking for the money that it must be costing, six sheets of foam for £10
i bought three lots. I cant think of any thing better to make so i'm going to make a chopper too.
I've made front elevation plans from online drawings, but have to ask you,
REBELSChop2small.jpg
this pic shows chop is the same height as artoo (1.1m) including antena. but how did you get depth numbers? and what did you get?
loving your work.

I love these alternatives to the expensive ways of making droids,
i have heard of r2s costing like 10 grand? mental. its crazy to spend that when the devil is in the painting i find.
i usually make mine from plywood as a main material but am just loving these droids, bring it.
More droids.

I can't remember what the measurements were, but it was a suck it and see type of thing. Everything was done by eye. I will take measurements and get back to you.
The lower right instruments I sure are going to do something when more information is shown about the show, so again I have shown a bit of poetic license.

Excellent craftsmanship, I cant wait to see it finished. Im trying really hard not to jump on the fullscale astromech bandwagon. That foam looks pretty economical. I've been working on a posterboard and foam core .5 scale R2 myself.

BTW there's a foam R2 build on the boards also.

looks like most of the pics are gone but check out his website

Thanks for the link. I like the half scale D2 and you don't need loads of room to put it somewhere.

Thanks for the link. I like the half scale D2 and you don't need loads of room to put it somewhere. I have worked with poster board before, and its a pain if you want to put bends in things. PVC board/ foamex/ sintra would work well for that type scale. Its easy to cut, heat and shape and it isn't expensive.I may make an R2 unit out of it when I finish chopper.
There is also worbla which I haven't tried yet, although my test batch arrived today.

Body height 18" by width 20.5". That should give you an idea of the scale I went for. I can't give you a total height at the moment as everything has been separated ready for sealing the parts ready for painting.

Thanks for the numbers, that's all i need, i'll compare that with what i came up with tomorrow.
i managed to find a great shot of the side view from the "meet chopper" video on star wars.com so i can start as soon as i fix scale.
it will make a change making something in my living room rather than out in the workshop or outside because of wood dust.

Hows he coming on?

He's nearly there. I have done all the electrics for sound and lights. The sound boards are USB programmable and are set up on a 12 channel RF remote switch along with the led board which has a number of setting which you can change through the remote. I really can't wait for it to be finished and take it on a troop.

One thing worth remembering for your build with foam. Get lots of spare blades and change them often to get a nice clean cut. This will save on a lot of dremel sanding on the edges.
