Star Wars Live-Action TV tidbits

So...this is still happening? It was announced what, four years ago?

Does anyone even still want to see this, or am I the only one experiencing hardcore SW fatigue?

Kinda stupid that they can't figure out how to keep costs down. Keep your sets small, don't use antique jewelry in the queen's underwear, don't have an epic CG battle happening outside EVERY window.

I for one was hoping this was going to be less "epic." No need for each episode to look like the prequels. You know, make it smaller. Simpler. Less grandiose, bloated, and crappy.

Article did not really say anything and seem to be more just a filler op-ed peice based on a small quote - like how it ends with him making the point he would not watch it regardless (guess that was an assigned story, or he is just a lonely bitter basher) but...
HELL YEAH I am still looking forward to it. I am as far from fatigued as you can get. All the novels, comics, games and cartoons are not enough and I make sure to get tham all.
Give me more.
Plenty of other things for you out there if you want something new.:thumbsup

I thought I'd heard from some recent interview with Lucas that it was taking much longer than expected to bring such a show to television, so it is going to be a while. (Sorry, can't remember the source)

Five, actually. Way back at C3. As I understand it, at first they tried to get a network to commit to 100 episodes all at once. That's the equivalent of five years, which is a long time in TV terms, so it didn't happen.
Then there were some rumors of it being a couple of mini-series or something instead.

I still haven't watched Clone Wars, so you aren't the only one.

Kinda stupid that they can't figure out how to keep costs down.
BSG, Firefly, Stargate, etc have all demonstrated that it can be done. Of course, those series don't have epic battles in every episode and have to focus on story and character instead.
If LFL is having problems figuring out how to produce their scripts on budget, it's a fair bet that the scripts are calling for some vfx heavy material or something equally expensive.

I'm still very much looking forward to it, though I don't know why at this point in time there would be a necessity for "epic battles" around every corner; the Clone Wars are over by the end of Episode III and the jedi, or those left of them, have all fled to the far corners of the galaxy. Better acting, better directing, better scripting and a bit less eye candy are what anything new from Star Wars really needs. And a cameo of Palpatine and Vader to really anchor it into the classic SW universe that most of us prefer...:cool

If memory serves, there were at least 5 preliminary test pilots shot back around 2005. There is at least one great writer who was approached as well as a well known one (both are members here). Think part of those people not coming aboard was due to merchandising demands (something to make a toy of here and there as opposed to story) and proper credit.

If 5 years+ isnt enough time to figure out how to shoot a cgi laden tv series, its safe to say the wrong people are at the helm. Whether that be the people at the top with demands that just cant be met or the people at the bottom who dont know how to make it happen.

Star Wars is not the most difficult thing to do. The back story is there as is the universe and designs. Build on it and go. Im still a fan of the idea where we get a story to every patron at the original ANH cantina that ends with that individual arriving at the cantina before Ben and Luke. No need to continue the horrible prequel trilogy nor involve hero characters from the OT. Just stories of everyday life for the oddities we have already seen. We get OT style thats character driven and uncle George can still do massive toy lines with a character having three different colored shirts and repackaged items. WIN WIN!

Of course what makes sense and what we get is moot.

I've been wodering about this for a while myself. Seems it will never get off the ground - but it's a chance for Lucas to redeem himself with the fans and maybe revert back to some more traditional style sci-fi filmmaking.
Another poster is right - no need for crazy CGI things to be happening outside of every window. I they need to keep cost under control, then story should be number one, and SFX second.

Lucas: 'Star Wars TV Series on Hold'

(digitalspy.com) Star Wars creator George Lucas has revealed that a live action television series based on the franchise has been put "on hold".

The director originally announced his intention to produce a show set between the events of Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope back in 2005.

However, at a recent digital screening of The Empire Strikes Back in Chicago, he admitted that the project's future is uncertain.

"The live action TV show is kind of on hold because we have scripts, but we don't know how to do them," he said.

Lucas explained that budget restraints had made it difficult to realize the grand scope of the stories he had planned.

"They literally are Star Wars, only we're going to have to try to do them [at] a tenth the cost," he confirmed. "And it's a huge challenge, [a] lot bigger than what we thought it was gonna be."

I have a low post count and therefore fully expect to be shot down but....here is what I have gleaned from a mate who was production assistant on the prequels.

The main delay for filming ( season 1 and most of season 2 ( as of march 2010 ) scripts are in the bag ) is coz dear old Uncle George has his sights set on filming in a certain eastern european country. Said country is due to change its taxation rules in favour of the film industry at an as yet undecided point in time in the future. As soon as this happens filming will start.

Don't shoot the messenger, I'm just reitterating what I have been told.

Yeah, I'd LOVE to see those! SW fatigue or not, that's pretty major if they're out there.

GotWookiee, your comment about BSG and Firefly is right on the money. My hope was that, due to money constraints, they'd HAVE to focus on smaller, character driven stories. But it looks like they're just trying to find a cheaper way to serve the same old swill.

I love the Clone Wars series, but you could never do it live action. That's okay--small and simple can be good things. How does a guy who wears nothing but flannel shirts and bad sneakers not get the value of simplicity?!?!?

I admire the man there he is living on welfare with companies that make massive losses every year and a $2billion pledge to find before he dies and he's still trying at least to budget a tv show that he wil obviously give away for nothing and not make a red cent from.

Go George :D

I think GL made a GREAT thing when he made ANH... And now there are so many die hard fans that know what to do with it better than he would...

He needs to hand it over and slap his executive producer name all over it.

That or I think I just want it to die. :sleep

And if he did try letting people who are more suited to make it than him (knowing what the REAL fans want) then I would say let them re-make the PT! Use some of the same designs and MAIN story points... but take out all the useless crap... Oh, wait... I guess that would be a total re-write? :lol

I heard that as well.
