Star Trek Voyager, Mad Catz laser pistol?

Ok, so I was at a prop party last summer, and say this really cool little phasery thing that I had never seen before. I had no idea what it was, but a lot of the other folks there did. They said it was from an episode of Star Trek Voyager. (I believe they said a woman pulls it on Hairy Kim after a race?) They talked about how it was converted from a "game controller, called a laser pistol, or something." After a lot of searching last summer I found out that it was a "Mad Catz" laser pistol game controller, and picked one up for like $12. from amazon. (I can't seem to find the listing any more, or I would share it.)

Anyway's, I have had the controller setting around for months now, and would like to convert it, but I really need some pics of the finished prop, and any info that might be helpful in the conversion.

Before anyone asks, I don't have any screen caps. I searched, and searched, and I can't find any, and I don't have voyager on DVD. So, screen caps is actually on of the things I'm looking for with this thread.

I remember the R&D thread on this way back in the day. They figured out that the little metal barrels in the front were gutted Mark X medical tricorder hand scanners (x2). Dennis Stines, before he was banned here, did a run of them for people to do the conversion.

Anyway, the episode in question is "Drive," from the seventh and final season. Screencaps for the entire episode are here. The device shows up on page 11. I can see these:

There may be more; those are just the ones I saw on a quick flip-through.

Good luck!

EDIT: I just did a search for "Mad Cat laser pistol" and I don't see any product by them that looks like the one in the show. Hope you didn't find the wrong thing.

Thanks for the info, and pics.

I got the right one, it has just gotten very hard to find, and it's "Mad Catz" with a "z". And some folk list it as other things. (like they will leave off the "laser" part, or "Pistol" part. etc.)

It may be a wile before I can post some pics, of mine, but I'll see if I can post something up, later this week. (I mean of the game controller, not the finished prop, that may take a bit longer)

I promise you, with 100% certainty, that the barrels on that phaser are NOT mark X medical scanners. I own a casting of the phaser in question, which came directly from HMS, and I also have Mark X scanners. They are completely different.

I remember when this debate was happening on the RPF, with the dudes from HMS saying "nope, they're not" and everyone on the RPF saying "yes they are". Strange times indeed.

And before you ask, I have no idea where the casting is. :( Sorry! It's in a box somewhere. Could be anywhere.

In fact, at the very same prop party where Matt won that casting (I think in a trivia contest?) from HMS, we took a Mark X medical scanner out of a SCREEN USED Mark X tricorder HMS had brought, and dropped them into the tubes that were on the casting and they fell inside.

So: MadCatz phaser barrels- LARGER than the Mark X medical scanner.

I remember the debate surrounding this prop and the barrels, but this one was debunked pretty solid.

I too have a screen accurite casting and did at the time of the debate. The barrels are made for this prop. Nothing like the scanner at all other then round. I am sure there are lots of people who have seen mine will atest to this fact. Might evn be some picture here on the board.

Great info gang, but some pics of one of these castings, or one of the screen used prop, would not go amiss. :)

I get that they are not in fact medical scanners, but do they have the row/ring of small wholes, like the scanner? I only ask, because I have on of those silly little flashlights from think geek, that look kind of like the medical scanners, and it's actually a perfect fight for the "barrel whole" on the Madcatz pistol. I figured if it should have a row of wholes I would save myself some work, and just use a couple of those flashlights. (I know it may not be 100% but that's cool with me.) if they don't have the wholes, I may just use some aluminum tubing or something.

I just found the instruction sheet that came with my game controller, and it actually called a "Mad Catz Fazor". Just wanted to correct my earlier mistake of calling it a laser pistol, incase anyone else wants to try to track one down.

Here are the only pics I could find on the web of the controller before it's trekked out. (I will still get some pics of mine, but since I'm having some computer trouble, it may be a wile before i can post them.)

Yes the are grooves on the outside and have brass stems inside. They can be seen in the picture above. I can't get to mine right now as well. I have a broken bone in my foot.

So funny to see this topic rehashed. I dont recall who, but I know that a few members made these and offered them for sale back when word of the found item first spread. I remember jumping up with excitement when the episode first aired because I had this gun for my playstation.

Hi Guys,
The barrels of the guns were turned alum. round bar the centers were drilled out with a unibit then the tips were put in them. The out side of the barrels had groves put in them. The back half round that goes down the back was also replaced with alum. bar with slots cut into it. I will see if I still have a cast some were and take photos.

I just saw there were new post to this thread, and this pic will not load for some reason. (it just says "This image or video has been moved or deleted.)

Great info, though gang. It sounds like the little flashlights I have will not work, but I do have some new ideas of how to make the barrles. If anyone does have pics of the actual prop or castings, please feel free to post them.
