Star Trek TOS Phasers. Whats Out There ?

If I wanted one that is high quality and had some kick butt sound effects but didn't want to spend $1200+ on a MR off ebay- would the Rodd.com one be recommended?

I have the newer HMS (Rodd.com) piece and it has the same lighting effects that the MR has (3 color LED's). The sound effects are also great on that piece (comparable to the MR). If you are looking for something that does what the MR does for a lower price the HMS is your best bet.

The Masterpiece Models kit that Lost in Trek mentioned is a great kit. But you would need to build it (or commission a build) with electronics (and metal parts) for what you are looking for. They are also a bit hard to find.

You have any Wegman/Heilman gear?

If you do and want to sell it, shoot me a PM. :)~

Thanks Phez! Exactly what I needed to hear!

I remember when the MR's first came out the roles were exactly reversed. The MR was sort of the bargain price and the HMS had the premium price. The HMS price stayed around the same as it is now but the MR's went through the roof in the secondary market. When I bought my MR's I paid 499.00 each for the signature editions. Good luck finding that nowdays :lol.

I guess my little effords are not to be counted??

Rich,
Yours count very much, but they are almost impossible to find nowdays and when you do find them, they are priced out of this world. I have a couple of yours from the 1990's and 1 from when they were sold on Rodd.Com and I would not sell any of them.

Thanks.

I guess I really should try to get them out again...

Rich

I think you can count 6 of yours represented there, A couple Roddenberry's, one Pre-Lincoln Enterprises and a one Lincoln Enterprises and one being a rare Jim Kirk all Metal model (The BN Knockoff) that you added your electronics and trigger.

;)

OK I asked this a couple of years ago...

As I would be using the same photos and measurements that everyone has used, that of the Greg Jein Hero Phaser, and making it a correctly as possible, and using a CNC mill and lathe, this will have it more Idealized than my earlier versions, would the fact it will be about the same as the MR and Masterpiece Model be OK??

Not trying to cut you out Rich, like was said I have not seen any around since the run from Rodd.com in the 90's? I have five or six of yours in my collection also. The newer two of them have electronics very comparable to the MR/HMS and are very nice.

As long as it is not a recast MR or MM kit what could be the problem?

I agree, it's a nice kit but something's not quite righy about the HMS/Rodd phaser. I ended up selling mine in the JY last year.

Personally, I really like the Masterpiece Models kit. With a few metal upgrades it's makes a great phaser.

Here are some photos of my Rodd.com build. As Trek Prop Zone members have seen, I've been having trouble installing the electronics, but it's almost done, so here are some quick-and-dirty photos. Still need to tinker with the P1 electronics, touch up the paint, etc.

The electronics are pretty neat, though. The P1 features a blue LED and firing sound, and when you snap it into the P2, the P2 has a blue LED, and the firing sound effect is much louder. Not as fancy as the MR, but still neat.

I've modified the kit in a number of ways to make it more accurate to the TOS props:

* Englarged P2 sight window, and replaced clear styrene window with plexi piece.

* Shortened the handle, and sanded the trigger box so that the handle is attached at a steeper and more accurate angle.

* Used real extra crispy diamond foil on P1.

* Removed P2's rear metal fin tabs and used plexi spacers instead.

* Thinned out frame around P1 emitter/sight "window".

* Sanded down too-thick P2 side-knob ring, and filled in P2 body's hole to fit the smaller ring.

* Replaced the molded-in three rear-deck P2 ribs with four brass rods.

* Sanded and used putty to reshape the P1 cradle ribs.

* Painted everything in accurate colors.

These changes go a long way toward accurizing the kit. The differences are subtle, but the kit can really look good and accurate with a little elbow grease (unless one is going for the stock "Trials and Tribble-ations" look, of course).

That would be great, what would be even better would be a metal phaser 1 in a more accurate shape that would fit into a MR phaser 2 body.
That would really be awesome.

Rich,

I own your V3 phaser, and if you make a close to GJ phaser, I will buy. I love TOS phasers!!!! :love

Rich,

It would be neat if you also offered a pistol phaser made of resin with appropriate metal parts, but SOLID - no electronics.

I would love to have one that looks GOOD/ACCURATE but that I wouldn't be afraid to play with and not be concerned if I dropped it or had to be worried about delicate electronics.

I realize this sounds a bit weird, but I would buy one -- kind of like having an Ed Miarecki version (solid resin with metal parts) but more accurate size and overall accurate details.

It can even be a bit wonky as far as matching the GJ phaser details.

My two cents.

I'm thinking of getting one but I'd like to know what the options are out there as to new or rare versions to get. Thanks

To be honest, whatever you decide on buying, if it's a high end prop, you should consider the potential repair aspect of it.

My MR phaser's P2 just went dead, and I have no means or way of fixing it right now. It's a beauty with the metal and weight, but it's a nightmare waiting to happen, and most of the problems with the MRs are with the electronics.

I have a Rich Coyle and a hero HMS too. The Coyle is about 4 years old, and the HMS about 2 1/2 years. I had a slight problem with my Coyle about 1 year ago. I had reached out to him, we communicated, and he resolved my problem quickly. My MR is going to be a herculean task to fix. I believe that my sound board is fried.

Just something I wanted to share to help you with your decision.

I'm working my way through an AA Phaser update (ala usscassiopeia.com) and doing most of the fabrication of metal parts myself. But I'm stuck. Are there still places to buy the aluminum Nozzle? I've looked everywhere. I know some kits came with them, but are there sources for just that part?

thanks,

Valor
